Lope Afonso calls for the “urgency” of enabling the planned and pending professional fire stations in the southwest of Tenerife. The candidate of the Popular Party for the presidency of the Cabildo denounces “the insular government’s passivity when it comes to putting these infrastructures into operation, which are essential for the security of a population of more than 300,000 people.”
Currently, the South of the Island only has one professional fire station, located in the municipality of San Miguel, despite the fact that three more were planned, in Güímar, Arona and Guía de Isora. Afonso denounces this situation, right in front of the facilities that the island institution has prepared in the municipality of Güímar where it is planned to host another pool of professional troops. Alonso argues that “unfortunately, they have remained closed and inactive since the beginning of this mandate.”
The insular government forecast was to open them this month with part of the new firefighters who passed the recently completed long process of tests in the mandatory opposition.
For Afonso this is a new example of “the passivity with which the PSOE has faced the management of public resources. He highlighted “the seriousness of this situation, because it directly affects one of the main values of any democratic society, which is security.”
At this time, to deal with an emergency that occurs anywhere in the southwest of Tenerife, the services of the only professional park are required, located in Las Chafiras (municipality of San Miguel), and which is more than 40 kilometers from, for example , Santiago del Teidewhich implies that, in an emergency, a fire truck would take no less than 35 minutes, as long as “the recurring traffic collapse allows it”, to get there, tripling the adequate response margin to deal with an emergency.
insular framework
The Strategic Framework for Island Development (MEDI) 2016-2025 states that the five professional parks that exist today on the Island are insufficient to meet the needs of the population, for which reason an increase in the number is proposed, also in accordance with their own demands of the professional firefighters of Tenerife.
In the specific case of the Güímar park, Lope Afonso denounces “the manifest inability of the current government to start this park, despite the fact that they have announced its opening since 2019which reveals that he has dedicated himself throughout his term to designing headlines, which have not been translated into reality, and which, in no case, do they contribute to solving the needs of the people of Tenerife ».
Finally, the candidate of the popular ones from Tenerife claims that “in addition to starting up the Güímar fire station, the Cabildo must execute the plenary agreements reached at the request of the Popular Party during this mandate aimed at starting up the Arona parks and Guía de Isora».
