The fishermen of the Canary Islands, and very specifically, those of the south of Tenerife, are on the warpath with the installation of offshore wind farms in island waters, only in Tenerife -from Güímar to Granadilla- in 92 square kilometers, one kilometer about the coast.
For this reason, this afternoon, at five o’clock, the San Miguel de Tajao brotherhood has convened at its headquarters all the neighborhood associations and representatives of the primary sector of Arico and Tenerife to a meeting with the aim of obtaining their support and preparing a large demonstration against the announced construction of offshore wind farms.
Fran García, manager of the Tajao brotherhood, is clear about it: “It is a great destruction, a terrible damage for the sector, since these mills are located on the marine platform, where we fish after they have reduced the tuna quotas. This will cause great damage to fishermen, but also to cetaceans or shearwaters”.
Manuel Díaz, senior patron of the brotherhood of Nuestra Señora de Las Mercedes, in Los Cristianos, holds the same opinion. “It is outrageous. I don’t know how you can do a study, with the pros and cons, without counting the fishermen. It is a death blow for them ”, he remarked yesterday on Onda Tenerife.
