The University Hospital Complex of the Canary Islands (HUC), attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has set up a room for comprehensive care in perinatal mourning processes.
Specifically, it is a Farewell Room in which details have been taken care of to make it cosy, comfortable and safe, achieving an atmosphere of serenity and calm in which the different professionals can accompany these families in the best possible way, communicating the bad news, address any doubts that arise, guide them in their decisions and offer specialized psychological support if necessary.
This initiative allows each family to spend as long as they wish without interruptions with their deceased or dying newborn, during that last (and sometimes only) opportunity to care for them and say goodbye in the way they choose, with the aim of respecting their link and generate valuable memories and experiences that can help develop a grieving process that is as healthy as possible, details the hospital complex in a note.
A year ago, a ‘Multidisciplinary Group for the Humanization of Perinatal Grief’ was created at the HUC, promoted by those responsible for the Perinatal Mental Health Liaison Program and made up of medical and nursing staff from the Psychiatry, Obstetrics-Delivery and Neonatology services. -Pediatric palliatives, with the participation of the Supervision of the Maternal-Infant Area.
Among the fundamental objectives of this working group is the preparation of a Protocol for Care of Gestational and Perinatal Grief, from a holistic approach based on evidence and good practices, to achieve excellence in care in both physical and medical care. psychological.
It also plans to prioritize multidisciplinary and comprehensive support by health professionals, given the high emotional impact that their actions have on the women and families they care for, and may condition the way in which they will grieve.
