A neighborhood proposal will lead to the Los Alzados family, which has already been recognized with the Canarias Award and the Villa’s Gold Medal, also having its own road.
The Los Alzados family, linked to the Guanches who fought against the Castilians after the conquest, will have its own street. They already had him Prize Canary Islands and the Gold Medal of San Juan de la Rambla, and now they will receive this new tribute. It will be a tribute from the Villa de San Juan de la Rambla “to the important role played by this family nucleus both in the history of the Villa and the rest of the Island,” announced the City Council. This was approved unanimously in the last ordinary plenary session after the file was initiated last September.
«By agreement of the entire Plenary, for historical reasons and taking into account that the bulk of this illustrious family nucleus is concentrated in the neighborhood of La Vera, we have decided that La Fuentita street be called Los Alzados, materializing in an act that it will take place at the end of this month”, explains the mayor Ezequiel Domínguez. “This idea is based on a proposal from the neighbors themselves and almost organically, since this street is already known as Calle de Los Alzados as the homes of most of the family are concentrated on it,” he adds.
“However, the reasons why they are deserving of this honor are not few,” continues the local councilor. There are «the historical ones, in which it should be remembered that, according to the data provided in the genetic analyzes carried out and the historical research work, it is confirmed that the family Los Alzados comes from a trunk whose roots are essentially Guanches and which, in addition, include main Guanches among them.not only because of the position of mencey they held at the time of the conquest of the Island, such as Benchomo, a mencey from Taoro, and Atbitocazpe, a mencey from Adeje, but also because of the important role they later played, in some cases protecting and helping all of their race to get out of slavery and in others starring in a fierce defense of their rights, in which it is necessary to highlight the figures of Andrés de Güímar, Gaspar Fernández or Antón Albertos”, he exposes.
Domínguez also focuses on the present: «The Los Alzados family has preserved an important legacy of traditional music inherited from their ancestors, in which truly exceptional taste and aptitudes are always shown both for singing and playing traditional instruments and for dancing». And he adds in this regard: «Proof of this is the rich repertoire of songs and dances that this family treasures; a repertoire that has transcended to Canarian society through the traditional music group of which the old Parranda Los Alzados is a part, which, in his honor, was called Grupo Los Alzados, still active».
