The neighborhood of Santa María del Mar, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is overturned these days in a massive collection of signatures to give fair recognition to the figure of Lolo Dorta, a social activist who passed away on February 16.
The initiative is being carried out through the Neighborhood Association Santa María 3 Neighborhoods, whose president and greatest exponent was Lolo Dorta, who fought to achieve improvements in the area such as the rehabilitation of Parque La Estrella. For this reason, they seek to change the name of this place and give it that of the activist.
To achieve their objective, the residents will transfer the collected signatures to the Santa Cruz City Hall in the coming days: “This park is what it is thanks in large part to the struggle that Lolo maintained for years from his neighborhood,” says Eloy, who is also an activist. Block.
The sheets to sign in favor of the campaign in memory of Lolo Dorta can be found at the Association’s premises and also in businesses throughout the Archipelago that have joined the initiative.
Another project: a sculpture in honor of Lolo Dorta
In addition to renaming Parque La Estrella, from the Association they assure that they also want to put a bust in his honor and that there is already an artist who has offered to make the sculpture for free.
According to Cuadra, this tribute is “the least that can be done regarding how much our colleague and great fighter for the rights of so many Canarian families abandoned by the system deserve.”
Finally, Cuadra assures that since Dorta “cannot continue fighting with us, our wish is that her memory remain. As he said, only the people save the people”.
