The Local Committee of Nueva Canarias in La Victoria de Acentejo, chaired by Vicente Pérez, denounces the level of deterioration suffered by the municipality’s Health Center since, at present, “it is in an unacceptable state to serve the public and so that the health professionals themselves can carry out their work in minimally acceptable conditions”.
Pérez added that the property “has significant damage to its accesses and windows, so it is urgent to carry out a reform in it. The worst thing is that it bears the name of Josefa Marina Zafa, known as ‘the midwife’, a person very dear to all the victorieros and victorieras and who is always remembered on Women’s Day for her invaluable work in helping our mothers to that an important part of the population of this municipality came to this world. It is very sad to see that the Health Center is as it is today and that nobody does anything to honor the figure of Marina with decent facilities”.
Born in Havana, “Marina was a woman who worked as a midwife in La Victoria when there were hardly any material or financial means. Her selfless work for four decades was very significant at a time when our municipality and other towns in the Acentejo region did not even have the figure of a midwife. For this reason, her figure continues to be in our hearts and it is impossible not to remember her as she deserves on Women’s Day, “concluded Pérez.
