More than 12,000 people have gathered today in the streets of La Laguna to enjoy the activities held within the framework of the IV edition of the Cultural Carnival and that have been organized by the City Council of La Laguna, through the Department of Culture and the Autonomous Organization of Musical Activities (OAAM). Concerts, performances and parades by the lagoon groups, the Great Mask Ball and children’s workshops have once again turned the old town into an open-air stage that has brought together audiences of all ages.
The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, explains that the celebration of the Cultural Carnival has managed to become an unmissable event for the citizens of La Laguna, but also for the public from other parts of the island. “This shows that we chose the right path when in the first edition we made the commitment to protect, promote and disseminate the history and patrimonial wealth of Carnival in our municipality,” he says.
“Talking about Carnival is talking about the Culture of the municipality, its history and its identity, while allowing us to recognize the work of groups and individuals who have fought individually for decades to keep the tradition alive. And they have achieved it because today they are a benchmark for the Tenerife carnival ”, he confirms.
This Sunday was the central day of the program and, on it, music, color and little masks flooded the center of the municipality. From approximately 12:00 noon, the parades of the children’s groups took place, whose route began in the Plaza del Adelantado and ended in the Plaza de La Concepción, where one of the main stages is located, next to the Plaza de the Supreme Board.
Once they reached that point, performances by Beavers, Joroperos Infantil, as well as La Voz Kids contestant Mario Falero and storyteller Güicho took place. At the same time, the boys and girls were able to participate in children’s workshops making carnival masks and hats or decorating their faces with the most carnival paintings. Finally, the parade of Los Joperos toured the main streets of the historic center of La Laguna.
In the afternoon, La Laguna experienced the great explosion of the Cultural Carnival, with two simultaneous stages, in the Torre de la Concepción and in the Supreme Board.
The Murga Reconectados, the Rondalla del Hogar del Pensionista, El Orfeón La Paz, Las Valkirias, Las Marchilongas and Los Bambones performed their parade and then went up to these stages and began their recital.
On the stage of La Concepción, the lagoons lived an unforgettable afternoon with the Great Masked Ball in the purest style of decades ago. It featured performances by Moisés González, author and interpreter of the official song of the Cultural Carnival; Virginia Guantanamera, Rafael Flores ‘El Morocho’, Lucretia and Edwin Rivera.
