Animals and story characters took over the Santa Catalina park this Sunday during the celebration of the Day Carnival, which on this occasion was aimed especially at children. But there were many adults who joined the party, some with umbrellas to protect themselves from the intense sunshine.

He White Rabbit and Alice from Wonderland, disguised as a rumbera, landed this Sunday on the Studio 54 dance floor in Santa Catalina Park with a march to give and give away. They had just arrived from Santa Cruz de Tenerife and they tied with the Carnival of Día de The Gran Canarian palms.

Cristo and Briseida hadn’t slept all night, but they claimed they felt wonderful.

The Andalusian Pepi lived in the capital for twenty years and always returns to the city to celebrate the Carnival

«We left for Tenerife on the eight o’clock boat, we spent the whole night partying and we just got off the bus right now after returning by boat at twelve. We went into a Chinese, we bought a bottle of Arehucas white rum with orange and inside my love. We are having a scandal. We are going to stay here until the music ends”, explained Cristo with contagious joy, while the rumbera Briseida danced to the music. And it is that as Christ said, “life is a Carnival and we have to enjoy it now because tomorrow we do not know if we will be there. Life is what it is today, yes or yes». Tomorrow, who knows what will happen.

It is not the first time that they have escaped to the chicharrero carnival and they are not the only people from Gran Canaria who take the boat to enjoy the Carnival on the island opposite, which is growing every year «Tenerife is very good, better than Gran Canaria, very well organized, with its chill out atmosphere, food… much better than Gran Canaria. It is a shame that you have to go to Tenerife to have a good time, ”they complained. Last weekend, he added, Santa Cruz brought together “350,000 people during the Daytime Carnival and the palms brought together 28,000 people. There is no color, but although those of Tenerife are better than long live the Carnival of Gran Canaria and long live the gran canaria island. We are going to be in the park until the party is over», Cristo made clear while emphasizing that no one was going to find in Las Palmas «a rabbit as white and soft», as he was.

And it is that more than a disco party this Sunday seemed like a fairy tale Carnival. Hundreds of characters had escaped from their books and movies and had gathered, under the sunbath, in a kind of heterogeneous rumbling around the scene of the Santa Catalina park. Some 9,500 people attended, according to data from the organization of the festivities. The thermometer marked 26 degrees. It seemed that the Carnival organization had decreed good weather.

The priest José María has left the clergy and has converted to free love, he clarified with his hippie outfit

The Canine Carnival lasted longer than expected due to the large number of candidates and those who came to enjoy the Cuentópolis show had to wait for Chanel the poodle to be crowned queen of the canine world.

Spiderman’s family also attended the party, hand in hand with Jessica, Antonio, Beatriz and Luis and their children Darío, Carlos and Hugo. The little ones are the ones who always decide the reason for the costume.

Since the three dwarfs were born, their parents have had to forget about the carnival at night and now they enjoy the daytime party. “The children choose the costume and we obey,” explains one of the Spiderman dads. Families stayed in the park for the day. «Then we will all go to eat together and then to the children’s parade. We are going to spend the whole day of Carnival. Last Tuesday we did the same and we had a good time, because the environment is clean, healthy.

This year is the first time that they go out to carnival after the arrival of the pandemic. «The children were born shortly before the Covid and we ran out of Carnival nights. It is another way to live the party. I like the atmosphere during the day more than at night », comments Jessica, who is rediscovering Carnival through the eyes of her children.

Obelix’s dolmen

Obelix and his dolmen, Asterix and the dog Idefix also wandered around the Santa Catalina park and caused a sensation. Everyone wanted to take a picture with them. «We have been dressing up as the same thing for several years, but at the Carnival of the South. This is the first year we have come here and it has been a complete success. We’re having a great time. That’s what it’s all about,” commented Fermín and Carmen.

Pepi, Mary and Socorro They were one of the few in the park that made an effort to come closer to the seventies aesthetic. They were by Tina Turner and they were delighted with the party. Pepi is Andalusian and doesn’t miss the Carnival and Socorro is from Pamplona, although she is now residing on the island.

The organization estimates the number of people who went to ‘carnivalize’ on the Studio 54 track at 9,500

Pepi has come from Andalusia, but he lived here twenty years and fell in love with the Las Palmas Carnival, so much so that it always comes back. «I love the Carnivals here, more than the chirigotas in Cádiz, which are also very beautiful, but I like the atmosphere here better. I don’t know why, but I love it. It will be because I have lived here twenty years. I have a house here and I always come two or three times a year”, one of them for Carnival.

It is her first year for Socorro and she is delighted. “I think it’s a fabulous environment. There are no words to express what this is. I have been to all the events and I like them all, because each one has its beauty. All the people dress up and I had never experienced a party like this until now », she highlighted. After the two they went to eat, but threatened to return to the park.

Very close to Pepi, Mary and Socorro danced to the sound of the music, the canaries María and Iván, who were in Cordovan mode.

recycled costume

«The costume belongs to my parents, from when they were young, and today we have reused it. We are having a great time, spectacular”, commented María. They don’t care much about the Studio 54 Carnival motto and dress up as whatever they want. “We have our own theme. The important thing is to have a good time, “they emphasize.

The hippies Esther, Verónica and José Maria. Juan Carlos Castro

The priest José María has left the Church and has converted to free love. This is how he assured it very seriously, to explain the change in his eternal priest costume for bell-bottoms full of flowers and the symbol of make love and not war. Like many people in the park, José María and her friends Verónica and Esther adopted the flower power aesthetic and were so happy that they were dancing to the music and waiting for the 101 Brass Band with Arístides Moreno to come on stage.

Pilar the octopus went to the dance floor with her sailors. Her son Captain Leo and her husband Aaron, who was a private sailor. All three are from Tenerife, but they live in the neighborhood of guanarteme for just over a year. “Last year we came to the Las Palmas Carnival for the first time and we really liked, above all, the acts dedicated to children and this year we have repeated it,” explains Aaron, although he considers that “the Tenerife Carnival it’s better. But for tastes, colors ».

Pilar intervenes in the conversation and considers that those from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria “are doing very well too. The one in Tenerife does not have events for children and does not have drags either. In any case, since we live here, we enjoy them here.” Last Friday, Aaron adds, “we came to the Queen’s Gala and I really liked it, especially the tribute to Manolo Vieira. And everything we have seen we have liked. The boy”, a three-year-old dwarf, “is delighted”.
