The Vilaflor Productive Green Forest is entering its final stretch. The project, financed with €578,000 by the Ministry of Ecological Transition of the Government of the Canary Islands, is based on the creation in one of the highest municipalities in Spain of an urban green space that will act as a carbon sink and will contribute to reducing pollution. In addition, it will be an economic and social booster for the municipality as it combines the leisure offer with environmental awareness.
The Minister of Ecological Transition, Jose Antonio Valbuenavisited the work of the project together with the mayoress of the municipality, Agustina Beltrán, and the regional vice-councillor for the area, Miguel Ángel Pérez. The project has been divided into two phases. The first, already completed, consisted of the conditioning works of the La Huerta Grande farm for its subsequent agroforestry exploitation. These tasks have focused, according to the Ministry in a statement, on the conditioning of the land, enclosures, installation of equipment, constructions for the exploitation and transformation of the land of the space planned for agroforestry and productive forests.
The second phase, which is still under development, focuses on the afforestation and planting service, including the labeling of this community infrastructure. Invading exotic vegetation has also been cleaned up on these lands, which were in a state of abandonment. The dissemination of the Productive Green Forest will be favored by its location, as it is next to the Sanctuary of Santo Hermano Pedro, a strategic point that attracts thousands of national and international visitors.
The project also seeks Minimize your emissions and waste, as well as being self-sufficient in energy with renewable sources. For this reason, the construction of a phytotreatment plant and the installation of photovoltaic panels in the surroundings are planned. Valbuena stressed that this proposal “complies with several of the objectives of this Government, such as the regeneration of natural spaces, the mitigation of air pollution, the promotion of ecological agriculture and the creation of jobs employment».
