SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 16 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Parliament of the Canary Islands hosted this Thursday the act of reading the manifesto for the ‘International Day of Asperger Syndrome’ in which the Aspercan association warned of the “ignorance” that society has.
“It is a moment of celebration for us, a moment to give visibility to this group. There is a lack of knowledge on the part of society about the characteristics of Asperger Syndrome,” said Lourdes Arvelo, representative of Aspercan.
His partner, María Europa Luis, stressed that this syndrome “is a social disability” that causes up to 85% unemployment rate in the people affected, so there are “little prospects” to achieve independence. “For this reason, the support and protection of the administrations are essential,” she added.
For his part, the president of the Chamber, Gustavo Matos, stressed that a day is commemorated to “know this reality” and learn to relate to people with Asperger Syndrome and their families.
“Ignorance adds barriers, and citizens often do not understand their day to day. During these four years we have opened the Parliament of the Canary Islands to be the place where social groups are visualized. With the ‘International Day of Asperger Syndrome’ always We have extended that hand, so that society and the administrations focus on them and their problems,” added Matos.
The president also said that “the difficulties that any family can go through multiply with this type of reality, and are even more intensified in families with few resources, which is why there must be firm public support.”
