Santa Cruz City Hall has presented this Monday its Waste Prevention and Management Plan for the Carnival 2023 in which he proposes the sale of reusable cups at the price of one euro.
The mayor of the town, José Manuel Bermúdez, explained that the main challenge of this action is to “mitigate” the impact that the festival has on the streets, in line with the new municipal waste ordinance. In this way, the plan will revolve around four objectives: the reduction of environmental damage and waste, reaching a “remaining fraction”, that is, that the waste generated is less than in previous years.
Along with this, it has been proposed to increase separate collection, an efficient execution of the project and promote awareness among citizens and the service sector.
To achieve this, the councilor responsible for Public Services and the Environment, Carlos Tarife, has reported that establishments will be prohibited from selling single-use plastics, so they must serve “preferably” in glass containers or reusable cups. that will have the price of one euro.
In case of giving out cans “they must, once consumed, remain in the establishment”, in order to “encourage recycling”.
garbage collection strike
It should be noted that in the midst of proposals to promote recycling and minimize waste, the garbage collection service has given notice of a strike that will begin on February 17, coinciding with the start of Carnival.
The reason is to claim a salary increase according to the increase in the CPI and protection against layoffs.
In a joint statement by ASOC and CCOO, they indicate that these demands go through a “dignified” collective agreement that includes both requests and that, in their opinion, the company in charge of the service, Valoriza, has refused to accept. “Throughout the negotiations, the company has maintained a very stingy position by offering a ridiculous salary increase and an agreement of between 6 and 7 years,” they say.
We will have to wait until Thursday to find out the outcome of the negotiations.
