Every year the Carnival of Santa Cruz of Tenerife brings together thousands of people from all over the world. Parties, fun, friends and thirst. Very thirsty. Some opt for the classic long drinks, others prefer soft drinks, but everything leads to the same issue: the physiological need to urinate.

It is well known by the inhabitants of the island that in the weeks after Carnival you can still see feathers on the street, sequins and even a smell that costs you to leave the capital. Despite being surrounded by urinals, which are never enough, many choose to relieve themselves in doorways, between two cars, in an alley or in a bush.
This year, the City of Santa Cruz of Tenerife wanted to remember that pee in the street these will be sanctioned with fines of 750 euros.
With the aim of reducing these incidents, 325 urinals have been installed throughout various areas of the city center which, according to reports, will have the “necessary” cleaning frequencies to avoid the use of the street. In this sense, the Councilor for Fiestas and person in charge of Carnival 2023, Alfonso Cabello, explained that users of restaurants and bars also “have the right” to use the private bathroom of these establishments, as long as they “consume there.”
The City Council assures that they will also deploy an environmental patrol that “will be in charge of ensuring the well-being of the streets, and crews that will operate in the areas of kiosks and bars, more prone to bottled drinks,” said Carlos Tarife, the councilor responsible for Services Public and Environment.
“In addition, another 100 workers and 40 vehicles with different machinery will work on each of the nights of the carnival in the street,” he says. Finally, the councilor has advanced that awareness campaigns will be carried out and talks and workshops will be offered in institutes in the capital “that promote recycling” and “caring for the streets”.
The mayor of the city, José Manuel Bermúdez, has concluded by indicating that all this operation “cannot replace” citizen collaboration, and has urged the participants to “not dirty the city more during Carnival than the rest of the year, but much less “, since the good result of the presented plan, in his opinion, depends” on everyone.
