SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 6 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Parliament of the Canary Islands will co-finance a documentary that analyzes the causes and consequences of the death of Javier Fernández Quesada.
With this support from the institution, exhaustive documentary work is guaranteed which, under the name ‘Quesada, the truth of silence’, investigates the event that shocked the islands in 1977; the death of a 22-year-old student on the steps of the University of La Laguna after being hit by one of the shots fired by the Civil Guard to quell a demonstration.
At that time, after the investigation and a commission of inquiry in the Congress of Deputies, the case was filed and no one was ever blamed, says a note from the regional Chamber.
This Monday, the president of the Chamber, Gustavo Matos, has received the director of the film, the documentary filmmaker Iván López, with whom he has shared impressions about this work that rescues the events that happened on December 12, with almost thirty interviews witnesses and people who were linked to the case.
The work includes important historical, textual and audiovisual documents that help to understand the context of that event in a convulsive period in the history of the Canary Islands in the midst of the Spanish transition.
“Since this project came into our hands, the Board of the Canarian Parliament wanted to collaborate in its realization. The murder of Quesada has to do with the fight for democracy, for freedom, a fight that finally resulted in a Constitution, in a Statute of Autonomy that has given rise to the existence of this Parliament and that it can celebrate 40 years of life,” said Matos.
In his opinion, “this event is part of a stage in the historical memory of La Laguna that cannot be missed, this documentary, which rescues what happened with unpublished material, is a way to prevent the new generations from forgetting what happened” .
The film aims to be the definitive and most complete audiovisual document to date of this case that transcended the history of the Canary Islands and Spain.
“The Parliament has been a key institution for this work, since it investigates the democratic memory. After 12 years of research, we have carried out an extensive work with unpublished material not seen until now, which gives it extra value, since those Images are the heritage of La Laguna, Tenerife and the Canary Islands,” said the creator of the documentary, Iván López.
In the tape, an in-depth analysis is carried out, dealing with all the points of view of the summary of the case with the contribution of Rosa Burgos, author of the books ‘El sumario Fernández Quesada’ and ‘La bala que caió del cielo’, and with the participation of other researchers.
The forecast is that ‘Quesada, the truth of silence’ sees the light at the end of the year.
