He has been part of the PP aronero for seven years and is the bet of this political formation for the Mayor of the municipality with the largest population in the South. At 40 years old, this economist and former triathlete, resident in Valle San Lorenzo, assures that she “loved” the project that the regional and insular directions put on the table for her. “It’s time to take the plunge,” she replied.
-Arona and, in general, the South, have not been favorable electoral scenarios for the PP in recent years. With what expectations do you face the appointment of 28-M?
“With those of promoting a real change. It is the greatest commitment that I have assumed on a personal level and this is a serious project for a municipality in a very worrying situation of neglect. People are wanting a change, fresh air, and that is what our project represents”.
-How is your relationship with the current municipal group of the PP and with its spokesperson?
“I have an excellent relationship with Águeda Fumero. There is no problem. She is the person who went looking for me seven years ago together with Pablo Morales (president of the local committee). For me she is a reference, and I call her when I have any questions because she is an expert in local politics ”.
-It has been commented that his appointment caused some friction…
“When a new team is formed there are always different ways of looking at it, but it happens in all areas, not just in politics. The fact that there are some differences does not mean that there is a conflict. there isn’t. This is a common, solid project that prioritizes the residents of Arona. I have only received support from the local electoral committee and the approval of the insular and regional. The procedures have been correct”.
– Has the resignation of Councilor Daniel González Rov surprised you?
“Yes, I admit that it surprised me a bit because it is not so common for a councilor to decide not to complete the period for which he was elected, but each person has the freedom to decide. We respect him, we are fond of him and he has the doors open for when he wants to return because he is a party person ”.
-Arona has experienced a convulsive situation during this mandate as a result of the open crisis in the PSOE, which has ended up breaking up the municipal group. What balance do you make of these four years?
“We have reached a critical moment and the majority of aroneros expresses their disgust with the way in which the crisis of the socialist municipal group has been addressed and the municipality has been managed by the local government. There is confusion with the lack of leadership of José Julián Mena and his team. The balance is negative, we are in a situation of paralysis. People do not want to invest or live in Arona and we want to change that direction”.
-With what message do you intend to gain the trust of the residents of Arona?
“We are a serious and committed alternative to promote change. We come with enthusiasm and the desire to work and give professionalism to politics with a project in which the residents will feel like protagonists and not second-rate actors”.
What are your priorities for the municipality?
“We work on two fundamental axes. The first is to develop internal work to enable efficient administration and the second is focused on investments and planning, with a perspective and vision of long-term development”.
-What do the sectors with which you have met since you were appointed candidate transmit to you?
“All the social, productive and business groups and agents tell us that they feel little heard, not attended to at all and that they are very disappointed with the politicians and with the image that has been given to Arona due to the conflict in the PSOE. We can’t settle for them going to FITUR and doing a show when we have problems with streets that aren’t even paved”.
-What reading do you make of the situation in the South, a region that has witnessed great population growth and that demands updating its infrastructures?
“The South is paralyzed and collapsed. It is curious that with the PSOE in the Government of the Canary Islands and in the Cabildo no progress has been made to channel the great growth of the region nor has a response been given to its needs in terms of mobility, health and education. We are worse than ever.”
-There are surveys that predict the entry of up to seven parties in the City Council after 28-O. What position will the PP maintain in a hypothetical pact scenario?
“Our strategy is focused on laying the foundations of a good project and recovering the trust of citizens. We are not thinking about deals. Ideally, the list with the most votes should govern with the support of the parties that receive the most support at the polls.
-Arona can be decisive in deciding majorities in the Cabildo and Parliament. What results do you expect for your party at the island and regional level?
“We are hopeful. A change is needed. I am clear that the best options are those of the PP in Tenerife and the Canary Islands.
-Doesn’t the climate of political anger that spreads throughout the country seem tiresome?
“We must transmit humility and closeness and when we make a mistake we must admit it. Politicians are not above anyone, they are people with a vocation for public service and the ability to negotiate, who must listen to the criticism of citizens to solve their problems. Politics must offer a kinder face”.
