The community of owners of the Artes building and residents of Pintor Manuel González Méndez street, corner with Pintor Manuel López Ruiz street, in Güímar, have denounced the sinking of areas on those roads, which has increased after the three days of heavy rain in September.
They state, yes, that they do not fear for the structure of the building, but they do fear that the sinkholes in the building will be enlarged, with the danger that this entails for the traffic of vehicles and people.
The Guimar Town Hall, According to the decree signed this month by the mayor, Gustavo Pérez, he has declared the emergency of the work to alleviate the sinkholes, admitting “the serious danger existing in the area, due to the problems of subsidence in the road, which affect the public space due to which accesses the portals of the Arts building and the premises, according to the technical report in the file dated January 18, 2022”.
There is still no set date for the start of the works, although they are expected to begin immediately, according to reports from the residents.
The Güímar Town Hall, for now, has fenced off part of the sunken sidewalk at the entrance to the Arts building. According to the technicians, if the street has yielded, it is due to the mediocre compaction – empty spaces were left – carried out in its day. “The City Council granted the license and received the road; therefore, he should have inspected it before”, comments from the community.
In addition, they recalled that this fact began to be reported in 2016, when the first damage was seen, and that “no local government since then has done anything to solve it.”
The Arts building underwent structural reinforcement when Mercadona installed itself on its ground floor, which changed location a little over a year ago, moving to a new warehouse in the Industrial Estate.
The neighbors do not fear for the structure of their property, but they do “because of the collapse of the road”, which caused a few months ago that “some had to take the shit out of their houses, when the pipes got clogged”.
At first glance, the problem can be seen on the sidewalks, with the transfer of a part of the land, but also on the sides of the building, where they are being unstuck. The neighborhood community warned of this problem in November through a letter to the City Council. Two weeks ago a technical file was opened by the municipal architect.
