SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 30 Jan. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The purification system of the Valle de La Orotava, whose collectors are already being carried out within the framework of the agreement between the Cabildo de Tenerife and Acuaes and which will be completed with the construction of a new treatment plant in Punta Brava, Puerto de la Cruz, will reduce the discharge of sewage to the ground in the Valley and will generate reclaimed water for use in agriculture.
Meanwhile, the current treatment plant in Puerto de la Cruz processes 6,800 cubic meters of wastewater and its operation is already conditioned by the passage of time and the increase in the population of the region.
“We are in a system that is especially important for the island as a whole, that of Valle de La Orotava, which currently has a capacity of 6,800 cubic meters per day,” said the Councilor for Sustainable Development and the Fight Against Climate Change of the Cabildo, Javier Rodríguez, who added that they are “aware that this treatment plant must be expanded” for which works are being carried out “to be able to treat and recover the water that is generated in the nuclei of the Valley that right now are going underground.”
The new wastewater treatment plant in Valle de La Orotava will process 20,000 cubic meters of water per day, or what is the same, triple what it is currently treating.
In this regard, Rodríguez Medina, who visited the current treatment plant with the mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, Marco González, indicated that when the system is working “a greater volume of water will arrive, and in this sense they want to lighten the construction deadlines of the new plant as much as possible”.
He also stated that they already have the project to expand this treatment plant and the objective is that it can be executed “as quickly as possible”.
The mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, Marco González, pointed out that “it is very important for the city that the integral water cycle be a reality, after many years purifying water but without reaching the desired point, and the objective with which The Insular Water Council, the Cabildo and the City Council are clearly able to execute these two expansion phases of this treatment plant, so they will continue to take all the necessary administrative steps to get it up and running and meet that goal.”
MORE THAN 12.5 MILLION
Since March 2022, works are being carried out on main collectors, especially in La Orotava and Los Realejos, which are the areas with the most deficits in the sanitation network, for more than 12.5 million euros.
The project for the new treatment plant, whose drafting has cost 188,251 euros, contemplates its execution in two phases.
In the first phase, a flow of 10,000 cubic meters per day of urban wastewater from the municipalities of La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz, Los Realejos and Santa Úrsula will be treated with MBR (Membrane BioReactor) technology.
This flow corresponds to the equivalent of about 90,000 inhabitants.
The works included in the project of the new Regional WWTP (PHASE I) amount to 21,521,770.15 euros, extending its execution for 24 months.
The second phase will complete the wastewater treatment by adding another 10,000 cubic meters per day, anticipating that the WWTP will finally treat a flow of 20,000 cubic meters per day.
This second phase will also contemplate the tertiary treatment of the purified water by means of reversible electrodialysis (EDR), which will generate a flow of excellent qualities for agricultural irrigation in the north of the island, as well as for other uses.
