The Council of Tenerife has solved the granting of subsidies worth 112,000 euros to the island’s town halls to launch projects for the recovery of historical memory. Twelve municipalities will be beneficiaries of these aidswhose maximum amount amounts to 10,000 euros per town hall.
“Through the granting of these subsidies we want to help municipalities to launch research projects, study and dissemination of the history of the 20th century mainly, in addition to the removal of Francoist symbols and the realization of awareness and dissemination campaigns ”, has indicated the president of the Cabildo, Pedro Martín.
“It is very important not to forget the events that occurred in our country during the forty years of the Franco dictatorship and for this reason we cannot give up trying to educate and offer information about the reality of history,” said the president who added that “the The Law itself indicates so, but it is also acceptable to do so and that these facts are not obscured by time and are forgotten by society”.
The municipalities benefiting from these grants are San Cristóbal de La Laguna, La Orotava, Candelaria, San Juan de la Rambla, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Los Silos, Vilaflor de Chasna, Buenavista del Norte, Fasnia, Tegueste, Puerto de la Cruz and La Slaughterand the projects to be developed include film workshops, documentary research on those subjected to reprisals and those shot, archaeological interventions, ethnography, oral transmission, and studies on traditions.
This call has been promoted by the Insular Directorate for Coordination and Support for the President, whose head is Aarón Afonso, and aims to recover, know and recognize the truth of the events that occurred in Tenerife, by virtue of Law 52/2007 and Law of Historical Memory of Canary Islandswhich include the right to moral reparation for the Canarian victims of the civil war and the Franco dictatorship.
