The City Council of La Laguna has reopened the hermitage of San Miguel Arcángel, in the Plaza del Adelantado, after the restoration work carried out by the Works and Infrastructures area to repair the roof of the building. The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutierrez, visited the religious site this Friday after the completion of some works that began in July of last year with a budget of 176,441 euros. “We recovered a landmark heritage building in the center of the city,” said Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, recalling that it is “one of the oldest buildings in La Laguna, which is classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest.” The works consisted of repairing the three-sided roof. The breakage of one of the braces, due to the weight of the materials, forced the closure of this space, and the works have eliminated the excess weight that the hermitage was supporting.
The hermitage of San Miguel Arcángel, whose first factory dates from 1507, has suffered various deteriorations over time that have threatened its disappearance several times. In 1530 the Cabildo agreed to pay for the repair due to the deterioration of the roof and walls. However, in 1539 the hermitage again threatened ruin. The Cabildo, which since its construction met in the hermitage, held its last session in 1541.
In 1836 and 1978 important repair works were carried out again. On the last occasion, a new clay tile pavement was placed between a wooden grid (the pavement, at that time, was cement; the original had disappeared), all the carpentry was redone, including the two doors (the side door framed in the hole topped with a red tuff arch had disappeared) and the walls are covered again, inside and out.
In 1982, the City Council undertook the works on the outside, including the treatment of the ruin corresponding to what could have been the sacristy in the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, and the free-standing position of the hermitage was recovered, which today appears more reinforced after the construction of the Justice building and the demolition of the old market.
