2024 will be the year that marks a before and after in the treatment of wastewater in Granadilla de Abona, one of the pending issues for decades in one of the municipalities with the greatest problems of discharges due to a historical deficit in sanitation infrastructure and rapid population growth.
If the mayor, José Domingo Regalado, pointed out, in a recent interview with this newspaper, that the entry into operation of the Los Letrados treatment plant (a star project in municipal sanitation), scheduled for the beginning of 2024, “will mean going from white to black to color”, yesterday he insisted that the new infrastructure will be “vital” in environmental matters for the municipality.
During a visit to the works, the councilor from Granada expressed his confidence that the works will be carried out within the established deadlines and recalled that the water regenerated in the new plant will be used for agriculture and to irrigate municipal gardens. The project, which exceeds 38 million euros, has been able to materialize thanks to an agreement between the Cabildo and the state public company Acuaes, which reports to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
In addition to the work on the Los Letrados station, the treatment plant for the Granadilla Industrial Estate is currently underway, which last December, as reported by this newspaper, began with the pre-treatment of wastewater, that is, the first phase of the different plant start-up stages, consisting of the elimination of the largest contaminant load that arrives through the collectors and pipes without the need for a biological elimination process. The next thing will be the entry into service of a biological reactor to eliminate an even greater polluting load. If the forecasts are fulfilled, the station, which exceeds an investment of 5.6 million, will be completed in July.
Likewise, works are underway on the Ensenada Pelada wastewater treatment and pumping station (one of the black spots in terms of discharges), the Charco del Pino subdivision collectors and the town of Granadilla and the pumping and drives from the coast. To these projects must be added the renewal of the sanitation network of the promenade of El Médano and San Isidro, for which the City Council has contributed 323,000 euros, and the improvement of the interior network of the town of Granadilla for a value of one million euros. euro.
