The Cabildo de Tenerife dedicates more than half a million euros to the paths and fruit trees of Teno

The Council of Tenerife It will dedicate 597,345 euros to a project for the maintenance of trails and the production of fruit trees of traditional varieties in the Teno Rural Park. The investment in these works will be carried out on a multi-year basis, and will end in the year 2026.

Rural parks are spaces that are managed in such a way that conservation is harmonized with activities for public use and local development. On the island of Tenerife there are two parks, Teno and Anaga.

“The harmonious development of local populations and the improvement of their living conditions in the island’s rural parks is an objective of the Cabildo, for this reason the planning of actions to be developed in their environment is continuous and meets technical criteria that mix the care of biodiversity with attention to traditions related to human use”, has indicated the insular Councilor for Natural Environment Management and Security, Isabel García

The counselor also pointed out that this project will allow “planned monitoring of the trails and tracks over time, and will not be limited to a specific and short-term action”, and recalled that “the empowerment and support of farmers to retake abandoned plots is a way to fight against desertification and fires forestry, in addition to consolidating the heritage value of ancient species of these redoubts of nature on the island”

Among the works to be carried out in this plan is the maintenance of the Official Network of Trails of the Rural Park, paying attention to the Elimination of herbaceous plants from the path until the original width of the tracks is cleared or the necessary width that allows the paths to be passable in safe conditions, in addition to the repair of potholes and gullies, cleaning of ditches and pruning on the sides, repair of retaining walls, as well as all those works necessary to keep these roads operational.

In the case of the chapter dedicated to the production of fruit trees work will be done to obtain patterns of fruit trees of local varieties of the region in which the Teno Rural Park is located. To this end, the cultivation of new abandoned agricultural areas will be promoted among farmers, and support for the production of fruit of traditional varieties as a differentiating product of the region. The species that will be promoted include quince trees, almond trees, vineyards, moral trees, walnut trees, chestnut trees and fig trees, mainly.
