The Council of Tenerife announces an investment of 597,345 euros in a new project for the maintenance of trails and the production of fruit trees of traditional varieties in the Teno Rural Park, in the northwest of the island. This amount will be distributed on a multiannual basis until the year 2026, as announced by the Island Councilor for Natural Environment Management, Isabel García (PSOE).
The island manager for the area details that this project will allow “planned monitoring of the trails and tracks over time, and will not be limited to a specific and short-term action.” In addition, she stressed that “supporting farmers to retake abandoned plots is a way to fight against desertification and fires forestry, in addition to consolidating the heritage value of ancient species of these redoubts of nature on the island.
Among the works to be carried out in this plan is the maintenance of the Official Network of Trails of the Rural Park, which provides for the removal of plants from the route of the path until the original width is cleared or, at least, the width necessary to allow the passability of the trails in safety conditions. In addition to the repair of potholes, the cleaning of ditches and pruning on the sides, as well as the repair of retaining walls and all the work necessary to keep these roads on the authorized network operational.
Regarding aid for the production of fruit trees, the Cabildo will work to obtain patterns of fruit trees of local varieties from the region in which the Teno Rural Park is located, which includes land from Buenavista, Los Silos, Garachico or El Tanque. . To this end, the cultivation of abandoned agricultural areas will be promoted among farmers, and support for the production of fruit of traditional varieties as a differentiating product of the region. Species that will be promoted include quince, almond, vine, moral, walnut, chestnut and fig trees.
