The Council of Tenerifethrough the Institute of Social and Socio-Health Care (IASS)puts out to tender for around 9 million euros the new socio-sanitary center of garachicocalled to replace the current nursing home and increase the offer of available places from just 41 to about 115. The mayor of Villa y Puerto, Jose Heriberto Gonzalez (CC)has confirmed that the Councilor for Social Action of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Marián Franquet (PSOE)informed him a few days ago of this key step so that “in a few months” the works of this regional residence can begin.
“In the budget of the Island Council of Tenerife This year, in the IASS section, there is a budget allocation for this project and, therefore, in a few months we will be able to see the start of the works”, celebrates González, who considers that this action is “magnificent news for Garachico and for Isla Baja».
This socio-sanitary center is an old demand from Garachico, which has spent years trying to transfer the current Nuestra Señora de la Concepción Nursing Home Hospital to more spacious and adequate facilities to care for the elderly dependents in the region. The Garachico Town Hall ceded in March 2021 to the Cabildo de Tenerife a plot of 3,400 square meters in the urbanization El Lamero for the construction of this new geriatric residence, which will be equipped with 100 residential beds and 15 day care centers.
This land, which is located next to the sports hall and very close to the current residence, will house a building with a capacity for 100 beds for the elderly with a recognized second and third degree of dependency. To the Government of Garachicothe transfer of the municipal nursing home is a necessity because it is located in a 16th century building that cannot be expanded or adapted to the needs of its residents. The current building cannot house more than 41 residents.
It will be built in the El Lamero urbanization and will have 100 residential spaces and another 15 by day
Jose Heriberto Gonzalez thanks Franquet and the insular president, Peter Martintheir involvement in the execution of this project, “and also to Carlos Alonso and Juana María Reyes because they have complied, each one in their time, in this matter.”
When the nuns of the Order of Saint Vincent de Paul At the end of 2012, they abandoned the management of this center, the municipal nursing home of garachico it entered a crisis and experienced serious economic difficulties that were about to end in a definitive closure in 2015. The support of the Tenerife Council, with new concerted places, has been key to making the center economically viable.
