The feral cats They do not stop growing in Tenerife, where the only refuge that until now was in charge of collecting them, the Valle Colino regional hostel, has stopped doing so when it ran out of space. According to data provided yesterday by the councilor of Santa Cruz Animal WelfareCarlos Tarife, between 2019 and 2021, the number of cats collected by Valle Colino grew from 888 to almost 2,400.
“What we ask the Cabildo is to collaborate with the four municipalities that support the regional shelter so that cats are also welcomed in their shelters, because they do not,” explained Tarife at the municipal Control Commission at the request of UP.
The mayor advanced that financial support is being negotiated with the Cabildo for, on a plot very close to Valle Colino, building facilities solely dedicated to the reception of cats.
Tarife advanced that the four municipalities of the metropolitan area have already agreed to modify the agreement with Valle Colino to improve management, contributing more money. “What we ask the Cabildo is to help us to improve the facilities,” added the mayor.
The councilor also pointed out an added problem in Santa Cruz: “In Anaga we cannot legalize any colony of cats, so we can neither identify nor sterilize, by establishing the island regulations that colonies cannot be authorized less than 500 meters of the Country Park.
