TRAINING SHIP FOR FUTURE NAVY OFFICERS.
The purpose of an Instruction Cruise aboard the school ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ is to contribute to the seafaring, military, social and human formation of the students on board, through instruction and training at sea and in port. Likewise, the external action of the State is supported, through the naval presence in various ports.
With a length of 94 meters and a beam of 13 metres, the ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’, was named Honorary Ambassador of the Spain Brand in 2009. The school ship bears the name of the famous Spanish navigator Juan Sebastián de Elcano, born in Guetaria in the current province of Guipúzcoa, around 1476.
Built in the ‘Echevarrieta y Larrinaga’ shipyard in Cádiz, the school ship was launched on March 5, 1927 and delivered to the Navy on August 17, 1928. It has been at sea for 95 years with almost two million nautical miles sailed by all the seas of the world. Her silhouette is well known to lovers of tall ships and she often attracts the attention of a large number of people in the ports she visits.
