The Ministry of Health of Government of the Canary Islands promotes and encourages research and trainingn of the health professionals of the tertiary level hospitals of the capital islands in the field of proton therapystate-of-the-art technology indicated for the treatment of certain types of cancer.
This new equipment will be located in the University Hospital of Gran Canaria Dr. Negrínregional reference center for Proton Therapystate-of-the-art technology that is currently only available in two private centers in Spain.
After a meeting between the Directorate of the Canary Islands Health Service and those responsible for the Radiotherapy Oncology and Radiophysics services of the university hospitals of Gran Canaria Y Tenerife to expose the details of these training and research actions, the Collaboration agreement that will guarantee the incorporation of proton therapy into the portfolio of services of the SCS.
For the execution of these actions, the Canarian Health Service through the Management of the Dr. Negrín University Hospital of Gran Canaria, signed a collaboration agreement with the Proton Therapy Center-Grupo QuirónSalud within the framework of which research projects will be promoted sets in the field of proton radiotherapy. These research and training actions will be carried out in the four university hospitals of Gran Canaria and Tenerife, which will result in the care provided to cancer patients in the archipelago.
This agreement will also allow, among other aspects, to carry out various training programs for professionals and management improvement between both entities and mutual advice on issues related to the activity carried out, as well as the organization and execution of common activities related to research, innovation, technological development and social promotion of health education.
After the signing of this agreement, which took place at the Dr. Negrín Hospital, a mixed follow-up committee will be set up, made up equally of representatives of said hospital and of the Proton Therapy Center.

The Canary Islands is one of the seven autonomous communities that will have a Proton Therapy team for cancer treatment. It is a proton radiotherapy equipment for the treatment of certain types of cancer.
The proton therapy It may be indicated for patients with pediatric or adult tumors located near the base of the skull, metastatic to the spinal cord/column, and ocular, among others for whom conventional radiotherapy is not effective.
The incorporation of this new equipment will improve the accessibility of patients to treatment, both in the short and medium term, with the current strict indications as well as those that are agreed upon based on scientific evidence and will facilitate clinical research and technological development. It is a commitment to the future, which will position Spain Already Canary Islands in the use of proton therapy at the same level as Germany, a European benchmark in the use of this technology.
