In late December 2022, it was announced that Tenerife would be the location for the 2023 FIBA Intercontinental Cup. Which venue in Tenerife will host the event? What are the dates and times? How will the competition be set up? All these questions and more are answered below.

What is the FIBA Intercontinental Cup?

The FIBA Intercontinental Cup is also known as the FIBA Club World Cup or even the FIBA World Cup for Champion Clubs. The world’s best basketball clubs gather at one event to duke it out in a championship format to see who the best players are internationally for the sport.

The competition has taken place every year since its inception in 1965. Out of all the countries that have participated in past championships, Real Madrid has won the most in the years 1976, 1977, 1978, 1981, and 2015 respectively.

Hence, Spain is the best-performing country for these annual sports events with nine titles. Italy is in second place with seven titles while the United States is in third place with four titles.

What Happened At the 2022 FIBA Intercontinental Cup?

The 2022 FIBA Intercontinental Cup was the 31st installation of the annual event. The four teams that participated included Flamengo, Zamalek, Lakeland Magic, and San Pablo Burgos. Both Zamalek and Lakeland Magic teams were making their debut.

Flamengo took the win for the 2022 event on February 13, 2022, with a winning score of 75 against the score of 62 from the San Pablo Burgos team. Flamengo’s highest-scoring game was in the semi-finals round with 94 points versus the 71 points that Lakeland Magic accumulated in that match.

When Is the 2023 FIBA Intercontinental Cup?

The 2023 FIBA Intercontinental Cup will take place on February 10, 2023, to February 12, 2023, where there will be four teams participating in the tournament. The teams that will be competing include the host team, Lenovo Tenerife, and the three visiting teams, São Paulo, U.S. Monastir, and the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

This championship will take place at the Pabellon Insular Santiago Martin. This was the same venue that hosted the 2017 Basketball Champions League Final Four and the 2018 Women’s Basketball World Cup. After three years since the event was hosted at this venue for the 2020 FIBA Intercontinental World Cup, it will act as the event venue again for the 2023 edition.

Predictions for the 2023 FIBA Intercontinental Cup

U.S. Monastir from Tunisia and Sao Paulo from Brazil are the two basketball club teams that will be making their debut in the 2023 FIBA Intercontinental Cup. Hence, we do not have prior performances in other FIBA Intercontinental Cups to go by to fully predict how they will perform in this competition. However, there are other accomplishments to analyse their performance ability.

U.S. Monastir did qualify for the Tunisian national basketball club championship in 2021 to play against 11 other basketball clubs. However, despite their performance and reaching the finals, Zamalek beat them to become the victors of the championship. Fans favoured the U.S. Monastir more than Zamalek in that match despite Tunisia’s loss.

Sao Paulo won the BCL Americas in 2021-2022. They placed fourth place in that same competition for the 2020 to 2021 season. They also won the Campeonato Paulista competition in 1943 and 2021.

Lenovo Tenerife’s team from Spain is expected to hold down their turf without mercy, especially as the top-performing team in the annual event overall. The Rio Grande Valley Vipers qualified for this competition by winning the 2021-2022 NBA G League season.

Conclusion

Everyone will be bringing their A-game to the 2023 FIBA Intercontinental World Cup. Who do you think will win the competition? Let us know your opinion in the comments.
