Garachico eliminates a dangerous exit in the neighborhood of La Caleta

The Garachico Town Hall has eliminated this week a dangerous exit from the neighborhood of The Caleta de Interián towards the main road the lower island (TF-42), with the aim of preventing accidents such as those that occurred in recent days on December 29, 2022 and January 3, 2023 from happening again. The mayor, Jose Heriberto Gonzalez (CC)emphasizes that it is “a provisional measure” until the Highways area of the Cabildo de Tenerife design a definitive solution for this area known as The barrierin this neighborhood shared with the neighboring town of Los Silos.

In this area there have been several accidents lately and it is something that is repeated from time to time due to the dangerousness of the incorporation. The causes of these accidents are the lack of visibility at the exit and other problems such as speeding or “the lack of actions on a road which has been the same for many years, despite the fact that it currently supports much more traffic than before”, as explained by the Garachiquense mayor.

The Garachico Town Hall has already forwarded to Road Area of the Cabildo de Tenerife “A request for action in the short term to reduce the danger and another, in the medium term, to offer a definitive solution in which we will collaborate in all possible ways,” announces the nationalist president. He has also addressed “personally” the insular director of Roads, Thomas Felix Garcia, “who has kindly promised to study as quickly as possible, with his technicians and with the municipal technicians, these possible solutions. We hope they arrive as soon as possible.” Due to the characteristics of the area, any project involves the purchase of some land in this urban and agricultural environment.

While these definitive measures are being implemented, from the northern Consistory “the provisional decision has been made to suppress the exit operation and only allow entry through that area of La Caleta, which entails some other changes in circulation within the neighborhood », warns Jose Heriberto Gonzalez.

Departure by Highness

The exit from the neighborhood of La Caleta de Interián will be limited, “until other measures are enabled on the road”, to the area of the Alteza supermarket, “which is wider and has greater visibility, although it can also be improved”, acknowledges the mayor. This will force all outgoing traffic to be diverted through the the square of San Andreswhich in González’s opinion, “is not a dangerous area, but it is congested”, for which he asks the residents and visitors of La Caleta for collaboration and patience.

“Safety must come first”

Despite the fact that this change is not ideal, as the local government (CC) itself assumes, “safety must prevail on the main road of Isla Baja.” After this “provisional and emergency” intervention, Jose Heriberto Gonzalez He trusts that the administrations will find “quick, effective and definitive solutions to put an end to this black spot.”

The Garachico Town Hall It has also sent the Carreteras area of the Tenerife Council its concern about the “obvious danger” of other sections of island roads, such as those that cross the town of Garachico along the maritime avenue or “the steps through Las Cruces, San Pedro, Genovés, La Culata, La Montañeta and La Caleta de Interián, which have exits with poor visibility. In all these cases, they are additions to island roads that cross important population centers. For the mayor, “some are more dangerous than others, but they must be re-analyzed to put new solutions on the table.”
