The Garachico car park will have two levels and a space next to the convent

The Insular Program for the Improvement of Accessibility to Historic Sites 2022-2026, approved by the Governing Council of the Cabildo de Tenerifeplans to invest more than 7 million euros in five public car park projects in the historic centers of the northern municipalities of Tacoronte, Puerto de la Cruz, San Juan de la Rambla, Buenavista del Norte and Garachico, where it is proposed that the current parking lot of the golf course football It now has two levels and a public square in the area closest to the cloistered convent of the Immaculate Conception, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC), with the category of monument, since 2014.

The island administration has announced that it will allocate some 2 million euros to improve the parking now enabled in the old soccer field, destroyed by a maritime storm in November 2018. The mayor of Villa y Puerto, José Heriberto González (CC) , details EL DÍA that “this project has already been analyzed by Historical Heritage technicians”, who see it as viable and “basically it will consist of roofing the car park, creating an underground floor and 70% of the current surface area to also park on the surface .

About 30% of the current plot will be a square or free space in the area closest to the convent of the Franciscan Conceptionist nuns to give greater relevance to this historic building. That square will be a space “between 15 and 20 meters wide, next to the convent, while the rest of that upper floor will also be a parking lot in the area closest to the sea,” explains the nationalist president. In addition, interventions will be made to improve the current accesses to the car park by creating a waiting lane, which will increase safety in entry and exit manoeuvres, and will improve traffic flow at times of greatest influx of vehicles.

Buena Vista del Norte.

This insular program plans to invest almost 950,000 euros to create a car park on Claveles street, in the urban center of Buenavista del Norte, just 300 meters from Los Remedios square. The mayor of Buenavistero, Antonio González Fortes (Sí se Puede), details that “it is about the proposal to make a car park near the historic center of the town in order to remove traffic from the main streets, offering a fairly close and comfortable alternative . At the time, the Environment area of the Cabildo planned the start-up of that parking lot, but it was never carried out. Now an investment is proposed by the Territory and Heritage Planning area that would be divided into two issues: the acquisition of the necessary land and the urbanization and start-up of the car park, which would have capacity for 93 vehicles and 9 motorcycles, in addition to several places for vehicles of people with disabilities”.

San Juan de la Rambla.

The initiative proposed for San Juan de la Rambla is the El Cubo transport interchange, valued at 1,693,182 euros. According to the project, “the nucleus of San Juan de la Rambla, historically has a great deficit of parking areas, which adds to a great problem of road insecurity in the access area to it on the east side, in the Santa Cruz direction -Icod de los Vinos. This also creates a problem with interurban public transport by bus. With this action “road safety and the quality of life of the residents of the area would be improved, and the use of public transport would be encouraged, since it is intended to build an interchange that not only serves the residents of San Juan de la Rambla but also for those of the neighboring municipalities”. In the interchange there will be numerous parking spaces and there will also be “an endowment space where it is planned to build a San Juan de la Rambla Farmer’s Market in the future.” Its location is considered in the historic center, in a large open space next to the TF-5.

Cross port.

The island administration announced in a press release on January 3 that in Puerto de la Cruz they would invest 7.5 million euros to resume the old underground parking project in the Plaza de la Constitución, next to the Bel Air building. The Councilor for Sustainable City and Urbanism, David Hernández (Portuense Citizen Assembly), lowers that figure to “two million euros”, clarifies that “the final purpose of this contribution is not yet defined” and stresses that “it will have to be carefully analyzed because there are more options in the city.” The parking lot in the Plaza de la Constitución is an old project of the Urban Development Consortium for the Rehabilitation of Puerto de la Cruz, for which a preliminary project and a complete feasibility study were already carried out in 2011. According to that document from 12 years ago, the cost of the work would exceed 8 million euros and would make it possible to have 333 parking spaces. It is an infrastructure that in 40 years of administrative concession would be capable of generating “accumulated profits after taxes of more than 35 million euros”, according to the company Trazas in that 2011 document.

Tacoronte.

The Tenerife Council has announced that in the aforementioned Insular Program for the Improvement of Accessibility to Historic Sites 2022-2026, 2,629,000 euros are reserved to build a car park in the extension of Juez Jorge García street, in the northern municipality of Tacoronte. However, the mayor of the town, José Daniel Díaz (Nueva Canary Islands), qualifies that “for the moment this is a declaration of will without a financial file or a specific project”. In addition, he emphasizes that in the case of Tacoronte “there were also other alternatives to study such as the V Centenario area or Calvario street.”
