SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Jan. 12 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The spokesman for the Government of the Canary Islands, Julio Pérez, has announced this Thursday that the president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, will travel “in a few weeks” to Morocco but will not coincide with the high-level summit between the two countries that will be held on 1 and February 2.
In a press conference to give an account of the agreements of the Governing Council, he has assumed that the summit “is between governments and the autonomous communities have no representation” but he has stressed that there is total “coordination” between the Executive and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hence, it was decided not to go to the North African country before the meeting.
Pérez pointed out that now it is time to define the agenda, the Canarian delegation “and who is being visited” and he understands that “it is reasonable” to maintain the “usual practice” that the president be accompanied by a delegation of businessmen from the islands.
He has said that on the table there will be several issues that link the Canary Islands with Morocco, such as the delimitation of maritime spaces, the fishing situation, the improvement of communications, issues related to research and education, tourism management or the execution of infrastructures.
The objective, he indicated, is to try to “contribute to the prosperity and progress” of Morocco and maintain “correct” neighborly relations.
Pérez has also highlighted that this trip was planned before the pandemic and was later delayed due to diplomatic tension between Morocco and Spain, and is part of an international agenda for the Canarian president that will also take him to travel to Cuba and Venezuela.
Regarding the working group for the delimitation of maritime spaces, he has indicated that they agreed to meet after Christmas but at the same time he has confessed that the meeting will not be held before the high-level summits.
