The company Air Europa will unite the airports twice a week during the next summer Tenerife North and El Prat in Barcelona. The route will be operational between June 27 and September 14. It will be carried out by a Boeing 737-800 with capacity for 186 passengers. The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Pedro Martín, makes a “positive” assessment of the news along the lines of “increasing our connectivity”.

The Globalia company launches two offers with Canary Islands as axis within his politics to increase its presence at the Catalan aerodrome. In addition to the route that will connect it with Los Rodeos, another will connect it for the same four months with the Cesar Manrique from Lanzarote. In addition, according to the specialized media, this initiative is being proposed for the next summer season in the Archipelago as a way of fully competing with Vueling and Ryanair to attract Spanish passengers.

Air Europa will link El Prat with Tenerife North on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The departure from the Catalan capital will be at 1:50 p.m. with an expected arrival at 4:20 p.m. De la Isla will depart at 5:10 p.m. with arrival in Barcelona at 9:25 p.m.

521,807

passengers

  • The Josep Tarradellas-El Prat airport received 521,807 passengers from Tenerife North last year, the seventh in Spain from where it receives the most travelers.

on the rise

According to data from Spanish Airports and Air Navigation (Aena), the Barcelona aerodrome received a total of 521,807 passengers from Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna in 2022, which represents an increase of 40% compared to the 371,729 who arrived at Barcelona through this aerodrome in 2021. A figure that is equivalent to the seventh airport in terms of the number of travelers received in El Prat. The number of travelers from Lanzarote also increased by 22%, going from 171,132 to 208,716.

Second market.

“The assessment is positive, as it should mean an increase in connectivity and, above all, in competition.” The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife affirms it regarding the opening of this new air route next summer. Martín understands that “it is for the benefit of the Island, both in the tourism field and in the mobility of those who live here.” He stresses: “The more connections we have abroad, the better prices and more alternatives there will be.”

The insular president explains that this new connection supports the expectations, which he hopes to corroborate this month –from the 18th to the 22nd– at Fitur about “the good progress of the Spanish market”. He abounds that it is “our second in importance”, after the British, with 883,000 travelers staying in hotels and apartments on the Island (data up to last October).

In addition, Martín adds that this context of reinforcing air connections in Tenerife North will be accompanied by new investments by Aena in Los Rodeos airport “which will be announced shortly and will mean significant improvements in the services provided.”

The plane.

The Boeing 737-800 is a common device on national flights. The 737 Next Generation is the name given to the −600, 700, 800 and 900 series– of the airliner. It is the third generation derived from the 737. Produced since 1996 by Boeing, it includes four variants with capacity for between 110 and 210 passengers. Air Europa has twenty aircraft with these characteristics in its fleet.

883,000

national travelers

  • Tenerife received 883,000 national visitors from January to October 2022 (available data). This figure means that it is the second outbound tourist market after the British.

The company.

Air Europa, founded in 1984, made its first flight in 1986. In 1991 a group of investors, headed by Juan José Hidalgo, its president, acquired the company. It is currently the main airline of Spanish capital with headquarters in the Balearic Islands. On November 4, 2019, the purchase agreement for IB Opco Holing SL, parent company of Iberia, owned by International Airlines Group (IAG) for one billion euros was announced. Included in the Globalia holding, its fleet amounts to a fleet of 43 aircraft.

Expansion of the commercial offer

Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna Airport has a new delicatessen establishment called Foodies. It is located in the domestic boarding area, on the first floor, after the duty free shop. The new premises of the Enrique Tomás firm, which is defined as the Canarian grocery store of the 21st century, occupies an area of 40 square meters and offers passengers a selection of products made in the Canary Islands, including cheeses, sausages, preserves and wines. The commercial offer of the airport has eight restaurants and seven stores that provide users with a wide range of alternatives. | JDM
