SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 8 Jan. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The City Council of San Sebastián de La Gomera celebrated yesterday, Saturday, the presentation of the official flag of the municipality and a symbolic tribute to the Canarian musician Juan Abilio Alonso Fariña, who in life was the composer and director of the ‘March of San Sebastián’.
The event was attended by island and local authorities, social, cultural, sports groups and a large group of people who gathered at this historic event for the municipality.
In this sense, the act began with a presentation by the dance group, also made up of the candidates for Romera Mayor, who built the structure that makes up the flag to the rhythm of the musical performance. Then the hoisting was carried out by the mayor, Adasat Reyes, and the president of the Cabildo de La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, accompanied by the interpretation of the ‘March of San Sebastián’ by the Band of the School of Music of San Sebastián, directed on this occasion by Silvia Alonso Fariña and Vivian Gutiérrez Abreu.
The mayor then took the floor, stating in his speech that it is a historic day for the municipality of San Sebastián de La Gomera: “We celebrate the first hoisting of the municipal flag. A new symbol that we incorporate into our legacy and institutional heritage and historical, which comes to reaffirm the identity and sense of community of all of us who inhabit and are part of this town, as well as to strengthen the institutional image of our municipality outside our borders”.
In the same way, Adasat Reyes highlighted the vital importance that the sea has had in the past and present history of San Sebastián de La Gomera, for which he explained that he wanted to reflect “in the wavy blue and white stripes of the flag, in representation of the sea that extends in front of the municipality and that has been and will be the protagonist of its history”.
In addition to this, the mayor thanked the Spanish Society of Vexillology for its invaluable collaboration in advising the City Council to ensure that the municipal flag is being discussed; “an identifying and distinctive flag, determined by its colors and elements, which reinforces our identity and name,” said Reyes.
On the other hand, there was a projection of a video in honor of the Canarian musician Juan Abilio Alonso Fariña and, at the end, the local councilor handed over a commemorative plaque to his family, in turn thanking them for the great contribution made by this referent of Canarian musical culture in the municipality. Immediately afterwards the Band performed other compositions by the author.
OFFICIAL FLAG OF SAN SEBASTIAN DE LA GOMERA
It consists of a red background with two wavy blue stripes, each blue stripe is separated from the red background by two narrow white wavy stripes. In the center is the municipal coat of arms.
The adoption of this municipal flag was taken to the plenary session of the local Corporation, on February 28, 2022, in which the respective file was initially approved. For this reason, said agreement was exposed to the public for 20 business days, in which no claims or suggestions of any kind were made. Therefore, the Heraldic Commission of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, in a session held on July 21, 2022, adopted the agreement to report favorably on the file for approval of the flag.
