Parrot park welcomes the year 2023 with the birth of 12 baby penguins at its facilities Planet Penguinin Cross port. Is about four rockhopper penguins (Eudyptes chrysocome) Y eight gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua). A “successful breeding season” to which are added the good predictions for the new year, which point to “more births of other species” in the coming weeks and months.
Papuan pups stand with their parents in the exhibit itselfin full view of the visitors, while the specimens of rockhopper penguins are monitored by professionals from Parrot park on the baby penguinboth because of the delicacy of the species and because of the great challenge that its reproduction has entailed in the facilities of Loro Parque.
“In the rockhoppers, raised without their parents, the adaptation period is gradually the same as the introduction of the rest of the birds,” they explain from the zoo, which in 2022 it celebrated 50 years of existence. During this first stage of incubation, the rockhopper chicks will be cared for in a breeding station whose temperature will gradually adapt to start hatching. integration and socialization process with the rest of the group.
In order for these animals to be gradually introduced successfully, Loro Parque reproduces the same environmental and climatic conditions that they have in their natural environmentrecreating their habitats with 12 tons of snow that fall daily in the enclosure, respecting the normal light cycles of Antarctica and recreating the polar spring, characterized by the great amount of light and the longest days.
Gentoo penguins, native to the sub-Antarctic islands and the antartidaare considered by the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a minor concern. For their part, the rockhoppers, typical of Antarctica, are considered a species in vulnerable state. Its population has drastically decreased since 1950. Loro Parque works together with other animal sanctuaries to guarantee their conservation through human care.
The birth of these four rockhoppers and the eight gentoos is a magnificent result for the reproduction programs of Loro Parque, which has already produced offspring of all penguin species. Likewise, it is a success for the conservation of the species, threatened by climate change alterations in marine circulation and glaciers.
Parrot park, which defines itself as an animal embassy with 50 years of history, has the largest and most diverse parrot reserve in the world, as well as species and ecosystems from the five continents.
