The Canary Islands received more than 11.1 million tourists between January and November 2022, which represents an increase of 155.1% compared to the 4.3 million that arrived a year earlier on the same dates, according to data made public this Wednesday. by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which estimates the total expenditure of these tourists at 15,772 million, 165.4% more than the same period of the previous year.
Last November, a total of 1.1 million international tourists were received in the Canary Islands, 17% more than in the same month of 2021. The main countries of residence of the tourists who visited the Islands were the United Kingdom (with the 33.1% of the total) and Germany (19.1%).
At the national level, the visit of 67.4 million tourists was registered until last November, 138.9% compared to the 28.2 million who arrived a year earlier in the same period, and the total expenditure of these tourists was 81,821 million euros, almost 161% more than on the same dates of the previous year.
In November, a total of 4.3 million international tourists were received in Spain, 29.2% more. The United Kingdom was the main country of residence for tourists who visited us in November, with a total of 828,680, representing 19.1% of the total and an increase of 38.4% compared to November 2021.
France and Germany were the next countries with the most tourists who visited Spain. France contributed 585,567 tourists (17.4% more in annual rate) and Germany 529,562 (10.3% more).
Among the rest of the countries of residence, the annual growth of tourists from the United States (82.8%), Ireland (58%) and the Nordic Countries (27.9%) stand out.
With all this, in the accumulated of the first eleven months of 2022, the United Kingdom once again leads the number of visitors to our country with close to 14.4 million tourists and an annual increase of 269.4%. It is followed by France (with more than 9.4 million, and an increase of 78.1%) and Germany (with more than 9.3 million, 93.8% more).
THE CANARY ISLANDS HOSTS ALMOST 30% OF WINTER TOURISTS.
By region, the Canary Islands was the favorite destination for international tourists last November, with 27.3% of all visits. They are followed by Catalonia (22.2%) and Andalusia (13.7%).
The number of tourists who visited Catalonia increased by 56.3% and stands at 962,715. 20.5% came from France and 16.5% of the aggregate from the rest of Europe.
The third community by number of international tourists was Andalusia, with 593,559 tourists and an annual increase of 22.1%. The United Kingdom was the main country of origin (with 21% of the total), followed by the Nordic Countries (12.6%)
In the other communities, the number of tourists increased by 44.3% in the Community of Madrid, 35.4% in the Valencian Community and 11.4% in the Balearic Islands.
According to INE data, between January and November the communities that received the most tourists were Catalonia (with almost 14 million and an increase of 167.5% compared to the same period in 2021), the Balearic Islands (with almost 13.1 million and a increase of 110.5%) and the Canary Islands (with more than 11.1 million, 155% more).
The airport continues to be the main entrance for international tourists to our country. Last November, 3.7 million arrived by this route, representing an annual increase of 31.2%.

The number of tourists who used hotel accommodation grew by 23% and rental housing by 40.3%. For their part, tourists staying in the home of family or friends grew by 39.6% and those staying in owned homes by 19.9%.
The main reason for traveling to Spain continues to be leisure, recreation and holidays for 3.6 million tourists, which represents an annual increase of 26.4%, while another 424,494 tourists arrive for business or other professional reasons ( 68.4% more)
The INE data indicate that the number of visitors increased by 20.1% among those who did not stay overnight (hikers) and 36.6% among tourists with longer stays (more than 15 nights).
In November almost 3.4 million tourists traveled without a tourist package, which represents an annual increase of 28.4%. Another 967,551 arrived with a tourist package, 31.9% more.
ALMOST 82,000 MILLION EXPENDITURE
Data from the Statistical Institute show that the total expenditure made by international tourists who visited Spain during the first 11 months of 2022 increased by 160.9% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 81,821 million euros.
Expenditure stood at 5,387 million euros in November, which represents an increase of 43.2% compared to the same month of 2021, when it was 3,761 million, according to INE figures.
The spending figures are very positive. Thus, the average expenditure per tourist stood at 1,241 euros, with an annual increase of 10.9%. For its part, average daily spending grew by 16.1%, to 165 euros.
The average duration of international tourist trips was 7.5 days, which is 0.4 days less than in November 2021.
The main issuing countries by level of spending in November were the United Kingdom (with 16.8% of the total), Germany (12.8%) and the Nordic countries (9.9%). Spending by tourists residing in the United Kingdom increased by 42% in the annual rate, that of those from the Nordic Countries by 34.7% and that of those from Germany by 16.5%.
The autonomous communities with the highest spending by tourists last November were Canarias (with 31% of the total), Catalonia (18.2%) and Comunidad de Madrid (15.2%).
Tourist spending increased by 22.6% in the annual rate in the Canary Islands, by 67.7% in Comunidad de Madrid and by 84.1% in Catalonia. The rest of the communities also presented positive annual variation rates.
With this, the INE data show that in the first 11 months of 2022, the United Kingdom was the country with the highest accumulated expenditure (19.9% of the total), followed by Germany (13.3%) and France (9.3%). .
Until November, the communities with the highest accumulated expenditure were the Canary Islands (with 19.3% of the total), Catalonia (19.0%) and the Balearic Islands (18.4%).
EXPENDITURE ON ACTIVITIES GROWS BY 21.4%.
Spending on activities was the main one registered in November, accounting for 21.4% of the total, and an increase of 41.7% compared to the same month in 2021. It is followed by spending on international transportation (not included in the tourist package) and spending on accommodation, with 21.3% and 16.7% of the total, respectively. The first increased 67.5% in the annual rate and the second 36.7%.
61.1% of total spending in November was made by tourists who stayed overnight in hotel accommodation, with an annual increase of 37.3%. On the other hand, spending on non-market accommodation (homes of family and friends or property) grew by 38.1%.
The spending of tourists who did not travel with a tour package (representing 77.7% of the total) increased by 45.1% in the annual rate. That of those who hire a tourist package also increased by 37%.
Tourists who visited Spain for leisure generated 81.3% of total spending (with a disbursement 39.1% higher than in November 2021), according to the INE.
