The City Hall of the Villa de La Orotavathrough the departments of Agriculture and Livestock, and Security and Emergencies, promotes among residents and local companies the elaboration of compost with waste of vegetal origin for reuse in gardens and farms. With the objective that part of the garbage generated in the municipality be reused as natural fertilizer, the Town Hall has published a didactic notebook entitled Preparation of compost with plant remains. Produce quality fertilizer on your own farmwith which it is intended to inform and raise awareness among landowners of the importance and benefits of composting as a respectful practice with the biodiversity of the rich agroecosystem that the municipality has.
This campaign to achieve a more appropriate management of vegetable waste has the collaboration of the Agriculture area of the Council of Tenerife and its main objective is to meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) through its program Rural+Sustainable Orotava.
This publication details that “composting is a technique by which quality fertilizer is obtained, thanks to the imitation of the natural process by which the waste of living beings is mixed with the millions of organisms that inhabit the soil, in the irrigation water of crops, in the air… thus producing the nutrients that plants need for their growth”. Composting manages to use for its own benefit “the bacteria, fungi, insects or worms present on the farms and generates their organic decomposition, under controlled parameters of temperature, humidity and air. This is how you get a high-quality fertilizer in the shortest possible time. In addition, its smell is more pleasant, typical of humid earth, and its appearance, with a soft texture.

Since the Town Hall it tries to revalue the agriculture carried out in the farms of a municipality with outstanding crops of bananas, avocados, old potatoes, vines or chestnuts. In addition, this initiative tries to protect a landscape that “can boast of conserving a rich natural heritage, with the vine in braided cord, unique in the world, and with other exceptional fruits such as bow-tie and pippin apples. All excellent local products for a varied and powerful gastronomy”, emphasize from the local Government (CC).
“Only through healthier practices such as composting can the conservation of the ecosystem jewel of the municipality of La Orotava be ensured,” according to the mayor of agriculture, Alexis Pacheco. According to compliance with the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 (SDG), agriculture is an activity that “without balanced planning, directly influences the loss of biodiversity, security and safeguarding of ecosystems. Mismanagement of natural resources, and precisely, the execution of cultural practices of overexploitation on farm crops can trigger an irreversible situation at an environmental level”.
The encouragement of composting is carried out through this didactic notebook and various talks such as those that have already been held at the facilities of the Farmer’s Market, located in La Torrita. This document can also be consulted on the municipal website.
