Garachico will open its new music school in 2023

Just one year after the start of the works construction of the new music school of the low islandin the municipality of garachicothe work is nearing completion, with the aim that its 200 students from the region can enjoy the facilities in the year 2023. The Garachiquense mayor, Jose Heriberto Gonzalez (CC), visited the works last week and stressed that “the new Garachico Musical and Artistic Training Building will be completed this month and, later, from the town hall we will take care of completing it with some external actions, such as the conduction of electrical current under the sidewalk and the paving of the free space or front square”. In his opinion, “The appearance and level of finishes of the property are excellent”. The municipal forecast is that it can be inaugurated between February and March 2023.

The demolition of the old Martín de Andújar school allowed the construction in the historic center of Garachico de la Isla Baja music schoolwhere students of Buenavista, Los Silos, Garachico and El Tanque. This project, valued at 753,000 euros, has been financed mainly by the Cabildo de Tenerife (90%), charged to the Insular Municipal Cooperation Plan corresponding to the period 2014-2017. The Northern City Council has assumed 10% of the cost and the contracting process and subsequent monitoring of the works.

The opening of this 909-square-meter property will also allow freeing the old San Isidoro school, which has been temporary headquarters. Some 500,000 euros were invested in this building to set up approved and fully accessible classrooms for courses and Training Programs in Alternation with Employment (PFAE).

The music school is a one-story building, with a large interior courtyard, which on one of its sides will have a small square to relieve an area that is surrounded by a two or three-story-high building. The mayor explained at the beginning of the works that “there was the possibility of building a second floor, but we have preferred to keep one and make that environment more habitable and pleasant. In the future, if necessary, we could consider an extension». It is located between the streets El Sol, Martín de Andújar, Conde de El Palmar and Cirilo Rojo de Armas.

The works finish with almost six months of delaysince the initial forecast was that they would be finished on June 30, 2022.

The centre, which is distributed in the shape of a letter u around a central courtyard, will house piano, percussion, brass wind, woodwind, string, musical training and a multipurpose room that can be made compatible with choir, theater and dance. It will also have administration and reception, management and staff room, toilets, changing rooms, storage area and a room for electrical installations, air conditioning and fire protection. In addition, it will be proposed, for a possible future intervention, a music room or small auditorium adjacent to the main buildingin the northwestern part of the plot.

The total cost of this action is around 900,000 euros, since the Garachico City Council initially assumed the project and the demolition works of the old Martín de Andújar school, which involved an investment of around 100,000 euros. Now it is pending electrical power cable trunkingthe sidewalks and paving of the square, works whose cost is around 40,000 euros.
