Shortly before seven in the morning the noise of the thunderstorm and heavy rain woke up in the middle Tenerife. What the people of Tenerife did not know is that it was already snowing on Mount Teide and what they did not imagine is that the rainfall would turn into hailstorms in other parts of the Islands.

Among them, the case of candlemas, near the coast. The municipality of the south of the Island woke up on Monday morning with several streets covered in a white layer like few locals had seen.

The Villa Mariana City Council itself shared some images of the consequences of the hail in the Güímar Industrial Estate, a few kilometers from the coast. According to the State Meteorological Agency (aemet), temperatures in Candelaria reached 11 degrees while the accumulated precipitation amounts to just over 23 liters per square meter.

storm alert

It’s just one of the consequences of the storm associated with a DANA around the Canary Islandswhich has led the General Directorate of Emergencies and Security of the regional Executive to set the alert for precipitation, wind and haze in the Islands.

Only during the early morning, the Islands received a total of 575 lightning strikes according to Aemet data, which also keeps the Archipelago in orange warning due to adverse weather phenomena.

Of the total number of lightning strikes registered, more than half (336) occurred between 06:00 and 07:00 in a strip that crosses the Archipelago from west to east. Lightning has struck mainly on the island of Tenerife and in the sea, to the north of the Islands.

Snow on Mount Teide

Among the effects of this Christmas DANA is also the expected snowfall on Teide and Roque de Los Muchachos. Hence, both from the Council of Tenerife as the insular corporation of La Palma has opted to close the accesses to the summit.

In the case of the Teide National Park, the Aemet has registered winds of more than 100 kilometers per hour and temperatures of 1.4 degrees below zero in Izaña, the lowest in the entire Archipelago.
