The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands, Alice Vanoostendedelivered this morning the Agricultural, Fisheries and Food Awards of Canary Islands, of its XXVIII and XXIX editions, and took advantage of the event to thank the winners for their efforts to promote and disseminate the importance of local production in the food chain, despite the difficulties.
The Agrarian, Fisheries and Food Awards of the Canary Islands have been held since 1986 and on this occasion those of the last two editions have been givensince the previous call was affected by the consequences of the pandemic. In the XXVIII edition, the prize for Rural Canarian Women went to Pilar Carballo, from Finca Ecológica La Jara, whom the Government of the Canary Islands has received an award for its work in the recovery and start-up of a sustainable agricultural and livestock farm, in the municipality of Arafo, in Tenerife.
The honorary distinctions of the XXVIII edition have been to recognize the work, among others, of Lismar Peña, founder of Flavors of the North Canary Islandsa small company dedicated to the creation and management of gastronomic projects and ideas, in which the promotion of local products in the Canary Islands stands out.
He also gets an honorary distinction Pedro Jiménez, professional in the fishing sector which has contributed to strengthening this activity, and specifically, to the tuna sector in Tenerife, highlighting both its contribution in the art of tuna fishing, and in favor of associationism to improve the commercialization of fishing products. María del Pino Calcines also obtains this distinction, and it is a “visionary” and entrepreneurial farmer fully dedicated to the care of livestock, on a farm located in the area known as ‘Huerto de Mézquez’, in the municipality of Pájara (Fuerteventura).
The award for Tourist Accommodation Establishment in the Hotel modality goes to Fedola, a business group that stands out for potato cultivation and research in the Canary Islands, in addition to its development in the hospitality world with the “GF Hoteles” chain, in Tenerife. The award for Restoration Establishment in the Canary Islands goes to the El Duende de Fuego Gastro Bar Restaurant, located in the municipality of Los Llanos de Aridane (La Palma), under the direction of Pedro J. Hernández Castillo.

As for the awards of the XXIX edition, Brenda Rodríguez has received the Canarian Rural Woman, and it is a cheese producer that combines tradition and innovation in an activity in which its dedication to caring for the native breed, currently in danger of extinction, such as the Palmera goat, stands out. The honorary distinctions have been for Lorenzo Oliverio, Caja Siete-Caja Rural Sociedad Cooperativa de Crédito, as well as for Natalia and Beatriz Mayor Monzón, from Ganadería Naroy.
Lorenzo Oliverio is the manager of Canarutex and president of Acecican and a professional farmer who has worked to rescue the cochineal crop in the Canary Islands. Caja Rural Sociedad Cooperativa de Crédito achieves this recognition for its support to the primary sector of the Canary Islands for 60 years, a support that has intensified in the last two years.
While Natalia and Beatriz Mayor are ranchers who have managed to preserve the traditional methods of grazing, transhumance and the production of cheeses matured in caves.
The Hotel Tigaiga-Puerto de la Cruz has obtained the prize for Tourist Accommodation Establishment in the Hotel modality, and this lcoal, which dates from the 50s of the last century, is located in the Tenerife municipality of Puerto de la Cruz. The Al Kamezi Deli & Bistro Restaurant has received the award for Restoration Establishment of the Canary Islands, and it is a gastronomic creation project committed to connecting innovation, tradition and the essence of the product of Lanzarote.
Inverpescatron Lanzarote SL has been awarded the prize for the Distribution Company of Seafood and Aquaculture Products, and in this case it is a company founded by Carmen Noelia Betancor Viera and Juan Francisco Martín Cabrera that, since its opening in 2012 , is dedicated to the purchase and sale of fresh fish, mainly caught in Canarian waters. Spar Canaria has obtained the award for the Distribution Company of Agri-food Products.
