SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Dec. 22 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands has paid the first payment of the ‘Aid to PGI banana producers’ for the 2022 campaign included in measure II of the Community Program to Support Agricultural Production of Canarias (POSEI), whose amount amounts to 70.4 million euros.
It is about the payment of practically 50% of the tab of some funds financed by the European Agricultural Guarantee Fund (EAGF) until completing the total aid valued at 141 million euros. In total, 7,517 petitioners have submitted a request, through the six existing banana producer organizations.
For those affected by the volcanic eruption on the island of La Palma, it has been contemplated that those producers with an assigned reference quantity are allowed to keep said reference quantity or the quantity proportional to the lost area.
Also, they are exempted from the obligation to market at least 70% of their reference quantity in order to receive the full aid, without
prejudice to other reductions or exclusions that apply to them.
An aid supplement of 10% of the corresponding amounts is paid to the beneficiaries who have received the corresponding aid for the installation of young farmers of the Rural Development Program in the current campaign or in any of the
four previous ones and that maintains said condition in the present campaign.
The regional councilor for the area, Alicia Vanoostende, stresses that the main objective of this aid is to maintain banana cultivation on the islands, “supporting its structure through producer organizations, which are in charge of promoting and promoting a quality product differentiated quality and recognized by all”.
