The Council of Tenerife It will manage 946.8 million euros in 2023, the largest budget in its history. Social Action, Mobility, basically public transport, and the productive sectors, with special attention to the primary, are the main axes of the items for next year. The insular president, Pedro Martín (PSOE), breaks down the accounts for 2023, which he describes as “powerful and expansive.” They grow by 20.7 percent (162 million more). The consolidated budget, which includes the companies dependent on the insular Corporation, reaches 1,055 million – up 20%. Martín presents the figures together with the Minister of Roads, Mobility, Innovation and Culture, Enrique Arriaga (CS) and the Minister of the Presidency, Finance and Modernization, Berta Pérez. A piece of information that stands out from the outset: for the second year in office (2021 and now 2023) the salaries of the members of the government group do not rise.

The budget is presented tomorrow for plenary approval. The exact amount of the global item is 946,865,673 euros. The consolidated figure, which includes the entire insular public sector, amounts to 1,055 million euros. It exceeds the previous one by 20%.
Pedro Martín affects the evolution of the budget graph between 2019 and 2022, which shows that “we are also facing the largest execution in history.”

Martín thanks the Popular Party for its support to carry out the accounts and stresses that, if it is not approved, “we would find ourselves in a tremendous situation, which would force us to paralyze social care, dependency aid, actions in the TF-1 and the TF-5 or the subsidies to the primary sector”, among other issues.
Mobility and Roads
Enrique Arriaga values that “the social field and Mobility cover 50% -25% each area- of the global amount”. He points out that this last department, under his responsibility, also has the highest budget in its history. It exceeds the previous one by 68% and reaches 126.5 million. He recalls that subsidies for public transport will increase by 41 million and large investments will be made for the purchase of vehicles and the execution of fundamental works, such as relief lanes or the improvement of stops.
In Highways, it also anticipates a budget growth of 26%, with a total of 88.6 million. The objective, says Arriga, is to prioritize the rehabilitation and maintenance of the roads, since “we have tripled the items allocated to the Conservation service with 30 million”.
In the Innovation area, which he also manages, the director of citizens highlights the Talentum program, endowed with almost 5 million euros, which will serve to “improve the training of young people on the island, providing them with greater job opportunities given the need for specialized profiles by companies.” He sums it up: “That they don’t have to emigrate to be able to work.”
Berta Pérez, for her part, highlights the criteria of “efficiency, social solidarity, sustainability and territorial balance” in the project preparation process. The 9% increase in transfers destined to the IASS stands out, which will have 259.5 million euros, 68 more than at the beginning of the mandate. This increase will allow the start of works in 12 socio-health centers, with 888 new places, increase the staff in 167 new job (73 million) and revalidate support for the third sector (4.8 million, 37 entities in the Social Policy Ring with its 30,000 beneficiaries.
Regarding the promotion of employment, the novelty is the incentives for hiring personnel in the private sector with 2 million euros. In addition, other strategic projects such as Neighborhoods for Employment (3.9 million) will be maintained. In relation to socioeconomic development, support programs for commerce, SMEs and the self-employed (3.1 million euros) will be promoted, with special emphasis on commerce and crafts, and 6.4 million will be invested in the works of the polygon of The bell.
In Tourism, a budget of 32.9 million euros is planned, which includes the execution of various projects to improve the coastline, through the Tenerife and the Sea programme, to which a portion of 6 million euros will be allocated. Likewise, a total of 15.7 million euros will go to promotion and connectivity, “an area in which we cannot lose the power that Tenerife has gained in recent years as a nerve center of communication with top-level companies,” he said. The Cabildo’s accounts contemplate an item of 33 million euros for the primary sector, considered strategic, which will have the largest budget item in history for the second consecutive year. Almost half of the budget (46%) will be allocated to direct aid to sustain agricultural production on the island (15.3 million).
The Corporation will assume the extra energy costs so as not to raise the price of water for farmers (7 million) and will increase the items for livestock (more than 7 million) and fishing (867,650 euros).

In the case of Sustainable Development and Climate Change, 37.5 million will be allocated to waste management, which includes the implementation of the new waste contract (26.5 million). In the same way, the 18 million for hydraulic works stand out, such as the improvement of the treatment station and outfall of Los Silos and the extensions of the Seawater Desalination Stations of Granadilla and Fonsalía.
