The Government of the Canary Islands will grant the Santa Cruz City Council a subsidy of 37.5 million euros for the construction of the 343 new social housing planned in the municipality. The Executive and the Chicharrero Consistory have agreed to replace the signing of the agreement between the two administrations by the granting of aid, considering that this last formula will expedite the execution of the works.
Yesterday, the City Council of the capital, through the Municipal Housing area, proceeded to formalize the request for a subsidy of 37.5 million to the Canary Islands Government for the construction of said properties, intended for vulnerable individuals and families in the municipality. “After waiting more than a year for the signing of the agreement, the autonomous administration itself tells us that this is the most agile way to have the funds that make it possible to start the construction of these houses as soon as possible”, highlights the mayor, Jose Manuel Bermudez (DC).
For his part, the mayor responsible for Municipal Housing, Juan José Martínez (CC), details that the construction of these apartments is part of the Canary Islands Housing Plan for Santa Cruz. He explains that, although 343 houses were initially planned, the City Council’s intention is to reach 390, “maximizing the number of properties included in the projects.” The Consistory plans to build 270 homes in Cuevas Blancas; 37 in María Jiménez and 86 in La Monja.
«This application for a grant replaces the initial idea of signing an agreement with the Government of Canary Islands, since this administration considers that this is a better formula. We had been waiting for the agreement for more than a year for regional financing to become feasible, although this has not prevented the City Council from initiating all the necessary procedures, such as the awarding of the drafting of the Cuevas Blancas and María Jiménez projects. for an amount of about 580,000 euros, “says Martínez.
Likewise, adds the councilor, the work for the awarding of the urbanization and reparcelling projects of the plots of the La Monja ravine has already been carried out, which “will be the third location where the properties contemplated in the Canary Islands Housing Plan will be built.” Martínez takes the opportunity to recall that the Santa Cruz City Council budget for 2023 includes an item of more than 14 million for investments in housing policies.
