The Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary IslandsBlas Trujillo, announced yesterday that his department plans to expand the Hospital del Norte in order to increase the portfolio of services available to this hospital. According to him, the purpose is to continue bringing care benefits closer to citizens and avoid trips to the reference center, which in this case corresponds to the University Hospital of Canary Islands (HUC). The feasibility study carried out confirms the need to proceed with such an expansion in 12,000 square meters of free land located in the surroundings of the complex, built in Buen Paso (Icod de Los Vinos).
Blas Trujillo informed that the professionals of the Hospital del Norte will soon begin to perform gynecology and general surgery surgeries. He recalled that the hospital center began its surgical activity on November 22, with the first major outpatient plastic surgery and dermatology interventions, and incorporating, that same week, operations related to Urology and Ophthalmology.
To carry out this activity, the Ministry of Health has reinforced the workforce with 23 newly hired professionals, who correspond to nurses, a supervisor, auxiliary nursing care technicians, orderlies, an administrative assistant, cleaning workers and a driver.
The Hospital del Norte, which has a surgical block with a surface area of 780 square metres, has two operating rooms, an outside waiting room and an inside one, a medical consultation, ante-operating room, an awakening area, an area for adaptation to the environment, a warehouse, hand washing, changing rooms for surgical personnel and control and admission, among others. The investment made exceeds two million euros between the execution of the work and the equipment of the facilities.
Major ambulatory surgery is the care modality in which patients return home the same day of the operation. Among the advantages it offers is that of reducing the waiting time to undergo surgery and facilitating the return of the patient to his daily life thanks to the fact that recovery takes place in a family environment. In addition, it frees up hospital beds for patients with more serious illnesses.

The Hospital del Norte currently has a hospitalization area with 49 beds, a Day Hospital, an Outpatient Pharmacy and an Emergency Department. The outpatient area includes the specialties of Cardiology, Pneumology, Neurology, Dermatology, Digestive System, Endocrinology and Nutrition, Rehabilitation, General and Digestive Surgery, Traumatology and Orthopedics, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Urology, Ear Nose and Throat and Audiometry, Ophthalmology, Hematology, Nephrology , Vascular Surgery and Rheumatology.
