SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Dec. 13 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Cáritas Diocesana de Canarias has warned that it has serious financial difficulties to meet the growing demand of people who come to the Institution for help. The crisis in the midst of the pandemic meant for Cáritas a 55% increase in the care of people, a figure that continues to grow after the return to normality and that, at this time, with the inflation crisis, is increasing again while resources of the Institution remain stagnant.

The growing number of people cared for after the pandemic and the inflation crisis has a strong economic impact on Cáritas that has led the Institution to a difficult situation. Since 2019, Cáritas Diocesana de Canarias served 55% more people and inflation means an increase in current and personnel spending of more than 30% for the Institution, while resources have not increased in recent years.

In 2019, Cáritas served 24,785 people. During the pandemic, the number of people served increased by 55%, to a total of 45,331. At the end of the health crisis and the recovery of social and economic normality, the number of people attended did not decrease, increasing to 53,186. At this juncture, Cáritas Diocesana de Canarias warns that the families affected by the successive crises since 2008 have not yet recovered their standard of living.

After the pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has caused an energy and inflation crisis that has had a hard impact on people with fewer resources, which also means a greater increase in requests for help from people already cared for and from new applicants who They have seen their vital projects cut short by not being able to meet the costs of food, clothing, housing, education, health, etc.

Christmas is a time of solidarity and Cáritas Diocesana de Canarias, at a difficult time to meet the growing and intense demand of the most vulnerable, those who first suffer crises, economic fluctuations and the violation of their rights, calls for the solidarity of the canaries and canaries, as well as the institutions to continue carrying out their social work.
