It is a non-sedentary market, of an itinerant provisional nature, which will also be held in Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo after the winter months, when the weather conditions on the coast improve. Meanwhile, the venues will continue to be Tejina (on December 4 and 24) and Valle de Guerra (on the 11 and 18 of the same month). Vegetables, fruits and vegetables, meat and fish products and also craft stalls make up the offer of this initiative.
The head of Rural Development, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the La Laguna City Council, Aitor López, comments that the opening of the itinerant market “should be understood as a milestone in the development of a global strategy for the promotion of food sovereignty, education environment and the sustainability of the territory”, and ensures that “short marketing channels are the main ally of small farmers” and contribute to “boosting local employment, even in other sectors such as catering”.
“From the City Council of La Laguna we have spared no resources to stimulate and facilitate the creation of a social structure of producers that groups the sector and coordinates to improve their socioeconomic situation, participating in initiatives like this one”, he assures, in reference to the creation of the Association of the Primary and Artisanal Knowledge and Flavors Sector (ASASS) of the Northeast, in charge of managing the Market.
Its representative, Juan Vicente Rivero Reyes, assures that this project arises from the need to “bet on short marketing channels and try to reactivate agriculture in our area, in a healthier and more sustainable way.”
The Association is made up of approximately 50 people from the region linked to the agricultural sector. “We want to offer our local products with proven traceability. This is the first step for the agricultural market in the northeast, which is our main demand, because it is very necessary for the region and the municipality”, he assures.
The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, maintains that with the launch of this Market “we continue to fulfill our commitment to a sector that needs short marketing channels and we offer our neighbors the opportunity to access local products and seasonal, healthy and respectful with the environment”.
The mayor underlines “the agricultural potential of the northeast of Tenerife for the whole of the primary sector. It is our benchmark agricultural production area, and with initiatives like this we want to contribute to its development.”
