The CC-PNC spokesperson in the Cabildo de Tenerife, Carlos Alonsohas demanded that the Government of the Canary Islands allocate at least 20 million euros for the University of La Laguna (ULL) so that this money is consolidated “as a basic structural budget” from 2023 and that the academic center can “develop its work and fulfill its mission with solvency.”
Alonso has reported in a statement that his group has requested the holding of an extraordinary plenary session in the Cabildo de Tenerife to discuss the ULL, which “is going through a very delicate economic situation, so its survival must be guaranteed.”
“We cannot allow Peter Martin and the PSOE turn their backs on the University of La Laguna”, which is “our main center of higher education” and which brings together “more than 25,000 people, including students, teachers and administration and service personnel”, says Alonso.
Alonso emphasizes that investment in the Canary Islands in higher education is 0.5% of GDP, compared to 0.8% nationally, while the draft of the Organic Law of the University System establishes the necessary public financing for the Spanish public university in 1% of GDP.
