Archaeological work resumes at the Lobos I Roman site with the fifth excavation

The Fuerteventura Town Hall and the Autonomous Organization of Museums and Centers (OAMC) of the Council of Tenerife They have resumed archaeological work at the Lobos I sites, on the Islet of Lobos.

Thanks to an agreement between both institutions, it has been developed during these weeks a fifth archaeological dig in the roman purple workshop after several surveys in 2012 and the excavations already carried out in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

For its part, the Lobos I deposit is located on Playa de la Calera or Playa de la Concha, to the southwest of Islote de Lobos.

This is the fifth excavation campaign in Lobos I, being the most internationally relevant archaeological investigation in the entire Canary Islands, since it would determine the presence of the Romans in the Archipelago.

In this sense, the archaeological data show the presence of a purple production workshop from Roman times, dated between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD.

This workshop places the Islet of Lobos as the southern limit of Roman interests on the western Atlantic façade, in relation to the supply and exploitation of the purple.

According to the archaeologists who have worked on this research, with this fifth campaign a new manufacturing area or shell dump has been discovered, expanding the scope of the vestiges located in Lobos I.
