SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Nov. 22 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Cabildo de Tenerife, through the public company Metrotenerife, has placed the Sustainable Transport label on the 26 trams in its fleet. In this way, the Tenerife operator wants to emphasize that the tram is the least polluting means of public transport in cities and that its use favors environmental care, as well as the well-being of society.
The insular Councilor for Mobility and president of Metrotenerife, Enrique Arriaga, wanted to recall that in Santa Cruz and La Laguna “the tram has been offering a quality and punctual service for 15 years, which has made many people leave their private cars at home and opt for public transport”. In addition, he stressed that the growing concern of citizens for the environment “favors the use of the tram, since it has zero emissions.”
Along these lines, Arriaga assured that the present and future of mobility “goes through guided collective transport, a sustainable, efficient and decisive system against climate change” and concluded that the tram “can become a solution that contributes to alleviating the mobility problems that we have suffered for decades”.
The Tenerife tram has had a photovoltaic plant (880 kW) for more than a decade, which covers up to 18% of the energy needs of the tram network. The energy and environmental sustainability of the tramway is also supported by other measures and devices implemented in the service, such as the regenerative brake of its vehicles. This mechanism instantly transmits to the power cables the energy generated by the braking of one tram to another that runs nearby, which produces a saving of 34% in the total traction consumption of the fleet.
The tram, as well as the rest of modern rail transport, has zero emissions because it does not produce CO2 and thus contributes to reducing the carbon footprint. In addition, the guided transport system helps reduce noise pollution in cities and has a green platform in more than 70% of the route of its lines.
