The situation of collapse that the aquatic sport of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is going through has led the Municipal Socialist Group to present a motion in the ordinary plenary session in November proposing relief measures for the municipal swimming pool Lorenzo.
The initiative, registered by the former Councilor for Sports Elena Mateo, seeks a remedy for the fact that all the activity of the city’s swimming and water polo clubs, as well as individual users, has been taking place for months in this single venue due to the lack of forecast of the municipal government team in looking for alternative places to practice water sports.
“Users and clubs have told us about the loss of quality that the pool has suffered due to saturation. Sometimes there is no physical space for more activities and it has been normalized that the land next to the pool is used as a changing room, given the saturation of these. It is unacceptable” explains the ex-councillor.
In the text of the motion, Mateo urges the rehabilitation of the CEIP Las Delicias swimming pool and the rehabilitation of the Michelle Alonso swimming pool, of the Las Retamas sports complex, to be made available to users and athletes. sooner.
Likewise, it asks to modify the contracting related to the concession for the Municipal Palace of Sports. Mateo warns that the city council has not negotiated in the new specifications hours and spaces for the clubs with the company that will manage the complex and that the saturation of the city’s public pools will become even more chronic if it takes place.
In the medium term, and with the aim of preventing this situation from repeating itself, Elena Mateo demands that the projected swimming pools in the Cuesta Piedra and Tíncer neighborhoods and the one planned in El Toscal be carried out. “I do not know if the delay in the execution of these works is due to rejecting what was projected during the socialist mandate or is it that they prefer a private sports model and public infrastructures are being saturated as an excuse for an eventual privatization of all the city’s swimming pools” Mateo sentenced.
