SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Nov. 18 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Gustavo Matos, revalidated this Friday the vice-presidency, for 2023, of the Conference of Regional Legislative Assemblies of the EU (CALRE) in the framework of the Plenary Assembly held in the Parliament of Wallonia.
At the ceremony, the Canarian Parliament was also elected to chair the working group ‘Strategy for the sustainable development of European regions’ for the next year.
Matos underlined the commitment that the Parliament of the Canary Islands has assumed, in this tenth legislature in which the institution commemorates its 40th anniversary, with the project developed by CALRE, “whose main objective is to reinforce the role of European parliaments with legislative capacity as agents to through which to bring the work of the regions closer to the European institutions”.
The president recalled in a note that the parliaments and assemblies brought together in CALRE represent more than 200 million people in the territory of the Union, for which reason he values the role that the regions are called upon to play in decision-making on European policies .
“They are the institutions closest to society, the first door they knock on and, also, tools that have proven very useful in combating society’s disaffection towards European policies,” he points out.
Regarding the election of the Canarian Parliament as leader of the group ‘Strategy for the sustainable development of European regions’, Gustavo Matos recalls the recent presentation in the Canary Islands of the Canarian Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030, a document where they are adapted to the reality of the archipelago , for its fulfillment, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the 2030 Agenda with its 169 goals.
“The commitment of the Parliament of the Canary Islands in this matter has been made clear,” says the president, who appreciates the fact that the islands have become benchmarks as a sustainable destination.
In this line, he affirms that the commitment of a territory like the Canary Islands to sustainability makes the regional Chamber an ideal institution to lead these works within CALRE.
In another order of things, the CALRE Plenary Assembly has elected Jean-Claude Marcourt, president of CALRE in this 2022, in charge of this responsibility in the next period.
Three resolutions have also been approved that will be sent to the European institutions, the first for a social Europe, the second for a Europe of environmental and digital transition and the third for a Europe of freedoms.
