SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Nov. 15 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Minister of Ecological Transition, the Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands, José Antonio Valbuena, presented this Tuesday at the COP 27 Climate Summit in Egypt the energy planning instruments with which the archipelago aspires to become a emission-neutral territory in the year 2040, ten years before the objectives set by Europe and Spain.

Valbuena detailed the main milestones and actions contemplated in the Canary Islands Energy Transition Plan (PTECan) and its different strategies during the celebration of Energy Day promoted by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge in the Spain Pavilion .

The regional counselor stressed that this energy planning, framed in the Climate Change and Energy Planning Law that will be approved in December, has raised the interest of other regional institutions due to its great ambition and the level of detail that it contains both level of temporary objectives as well as current data in areas such as sustainable mobility, the penetration of renewables or energy consumption.

Valbuena stressed that the Canary Islands, through the PTECan, will be able to solve its mitigation tasks against climate change and in turn fill a gap in energy planning that the Canary Islands had since the extinct PECAN, which was approved in 2006 and was valid until 2015. , picks up a note from his apartment.

“The islands have made significant progress in energy matters such as photovoltaic self-consumption, where only so far in 2022 more than 7,000 new installations have been authorized for this type of energy, and other important horizons are within reach such as the gigawatt of renewable power installed in the first months of 2023,” he added.

Valbuena also took advantage of this event to recall that the energy planning of the Canary Islands must be complemented with a legislative modification at the state level that allows the Canary Islands to replace their current generation groups with more efficient ones that contribute to a true penetration of renewables and avoid discharge to network that is currently being produced.

MANAGE RENEWABLE ENERGY SURPLUS

Likewise, he defended that the archipelago be included in the national regulation of the storage market to efficiently manage the surplus of renewable energy and the empowerment of criteria for the creation of energy communities in the territory, among other measures.

The involvement of the Canary Islands in this Climate Summit began this Monday with the holding of different bilateral meetings with companies dedicated to sectors such as renewables or the fight against climate change and with government representatives from other autonomous communities in Spain and other countries. .

Specifically, this is the first participation in the history of the Canary Islands in the official agenda of the most important international event dedicated to the global fight against climate change.

The Ministry’s agenda will continue until this Wednesday when Valbuena will take part in other events called ‘Projection for adaptation to climate change: vulnerability and flood-prone areas as a tool for adaptation’ and ‘Energy infrastructure, governance, regulatory framework to promote the transition and the resilience of the islands’.

In both cases, he will share an analysis and exhibition table with governments such as those of the Balearic Islands and Taiwan.
