In the month of October, the Canary Islands registered four people who died due to unintentional drowning in the aquatic spaces of the Archipelago and between January and October 43 people have died from this cause, according to the National Drowning Report (INA), prepared by the Royal Federation Spanish Rescue and First Aid.
At the national level, according to the aforementioned study, in October 24 people drowned and in the global calculation this figure represents fifteen more than in the same month as last year, which had been the one with the fewest fatalities recorded in the historical series. which has been going on since 2015, when there were nine deaths.
Between January 1 and October 31, 2022, 345 people have died from this cause in Spain, 112 more than in the same period of the previous year, when a total of 233 people lost their lives, which represents a growth of 48 percent.
The National Drowning Report (INA) shows that 17 men and 7 women died from unintentional drowning last October, so almost three quarters of the people who died are men, as is the case for the year as a whole (279 of 365).
A total of 10 deaths occurred on beaches in the month of October, so that it continues to be the space where the most deaths occur (182 of the total of 345 so far this year), 4 in rivers, 3 in swimming pools and 7 in places to be determined.
The origin of 14 of the 24 people who died is unknown, while 5 were European and the same number, specifically, Spanish, while all the cases of unintentional drowning with fatal result in October occurred in places lacking surveillance.
By communities, Andalusia was the territory where there were more deaths last month (5), followed by the Canary Islands (4); Valencian Community, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Galicia and the Basque Country (with 2 each) and Castilla y León, Ceuta and the Region of Murcia (1 in each territory).
The Valencian Community is the one that registers the most deaths in the first ten months of 2022 (64), ahead of Andalusia (54), the Canary Islands (43), Catalonia (40), the Balearic Islands (37), Galicia (25), the Region Murcia (14), Cantabria (12), Asturias (11), Castilla y León (10), Castilla-La Mancha (8), Basque Country (7), Extremadura (6), La Rioja (5), Aragón ( 4), Community of Madrid (3), Navarra (1) and Ceuta (1), while in Melilla none have been produced.
The age group in which the most deaths were recorded in October was that of those over 75 years of age (4), followed by that of 65 to 74 (3), so that the 96 deaths between both groups (46 and 50 respectively) , represent 27.82 percent of the total since the beginning of the year.
Two-thirds of the deaths, 16 of the 24, occurred between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. during the month of October.
